I've seen 2 types of starter motor that fit the MK1. Got any piccies?

One like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOYOTA-MR2-MK1-4- ... 2a0d6a469e

T'other has a big and a small cylinder side by side. (easier to fit too, from what I remember)

There's 2 different starters listed in the EPC for the MK1
28100-15160- ::8608-8912 :STARTER ASSY :4A#..AW11..12V 0.8KW
28100-15180- ::8411-8912 :STARTER ASSY :4A#..AW11..12V 1.0KW

Looks like the early cars, from frame number -0011355 are the 1KW starter and the later cars from frame number -0091542 are the 0.8KW starter.
I'd guess it's something to do with the C50/C52 gearbox change, they should be interchangeable but I'm not sure. Perhaps someone else can shed some light on this.

Can't shed any light on the start motor issue but reading the thread I'd definately say that you have a cross-over vehicle. i wasn't sure until you mentioned the roof aerial - I really can not think of why anyone would go to the pain of trying to convert the 1b position of the aerial to the 1a. It's a royal PITA to feed the aerial up there. Are the holes even present on the roof on the 1b shell in this location with a blanking plate?

I've been trying to find out more about his car and going by the chassis number it was built in 1989, so definitely not a crossover car.
Tin tops were JDM only (or least never available in the UK) so every chance that the standard location for the aerial is on the roof.

Yea jimi found out alot of info about my car :). I just think its had a few changes during its 21 year life including the starter motor for some reason. Im ganna go underneath it later when I get home and get the Starter motor number and see where this bu88er has come from. Mean while I have put in a new battery and it is running fine now but makes a horrid grinding noise on start up.

Sounds about right, the one I had on my old coupe looked a lot like the Mk3 starter motor. I sold the starter to a fellow forum member and it resulted in much head scratching. :lol:

Tin top! That would account for the aerial position - same as the sunroof models.

Well a few more pics for now of little mods and bits i've done.

Image

Got a quick shift on that as well as the linkrod metal bushes.

Image

The plastic triming was sprayed by a previous owner so I took them all off and repainted them black the vents are now on and are black as well but the roof trim I havent found a deep 10mm socket yet :?

Image
started on the wheels and im kinda hoping that i can get a mirror finish out off them eventually.

Same with the rocker covers
Image

and a little etched plate
Image
.

Ive also got a new battery in today and it seems to be starting now but only just the car kinda of needs alot of throttle and when i dont throttle it it sounds like its going to die but the starter makes a horrid noise

:-k I think I've seen that car before at a central south DC meet about 10 years ago. From what I remember it was a barn find that the guy wanted to do up. It had all it's eccentricities back then from what I remember, although I'm not sure if it had the red/black seats. :-k

Did you buy it down south?

Thanks limi so the one ive got fits cause im going to attempt to put it on tonight as the mechanics are being arses about it and started calling me twit for getting the wrong part etc and i want to put this one on myself just so i can drive up there and put them in there place.

Yea i bought it from a guy in st albans so if you can remember what has been changed on this car ? cause the engine plate shows the seats are meant to be red and black trim

I'm most likely mistaken Rick, I only saw the car at a couple of meets but it did stick in my head seeing as how unusual it was.

There can't be many Burgandiddy Mk1 tintops in the UK.

The starter that you've bought is the more numerous UK one and is fully interchangable with the unusual/rarer ones that I've had. :thumleft:

o rite, well I'll let all know either later tonight or tomorrow morning how it goes cause now the car wont start so the mechanic that took the rare looking one off had made it even worse :evil:
