Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
Hoping people can give me some advice.
My alternator has just gone on my 2.0 uk rev2. I need a cheap repair or replacement.
I'm not much of a mechanic but if its really simple i'll give it ago.
Any suggestions? and how much is it likely to cost?
cheers
David
Items wanted section and looks through parts for sale. Check if you have an oval or round plug alternator so you know which one you need.
You're looking at £150+ I believe from Toyota or -£50 for a decent used item.
It's easy enough to replace if there is nothing in its way.
Stock twin exhaust systems can foul access, and you will need to drop the subframe down too.
I have a single exit exhaust which exits on the opposite side to the alternator, last time I changed mine the garage charged me £60 labour.
Rev2 will be round plug - but check first on your car
recon alternator from TCB will run you 100 shipped - just had one replaced.
Used will be cheaper, question of the source really...
With a blueflame exhaust on my car it was a fiddly job, but no need to drop subframe, but prepare for skin coming off knuckles and a lot of swearing
Biggest pain was the long bolt on the bottom of the alternator - needed convincing with heat to come out.
thats great. thanks everyone for the info.
think i'll leave it for the professionals.
Is there a way of telling if its round or square plugs without removing it?
