.your timing would be out all the time.

.i was advised about this when i had similar woes.
you haven't tried to mess with the tickover rate by adjusting that small screw on the the TB have you or replaced the throttle position switch and not re calibrated..
.
.TBH a compression test sounds like a good idea, and I really hope that its not that and you get good readings across the pots.
A spraying of fairy liquid/water would show up any air leaks in the pipework and cost nothing/ easy to do.
Another thing that I checked when having probs was all the splice connectors that I used to chop into the loom for avcr etc..
.just making sure that they wern't touching the body work or getting damp, cos the boot is a very leaky area.

Not meaning to hijack, but mine
(now rev3) has a slight misfire when cold and chucks out loads of grey smoke that stinks of fuel, but the misfire doesn't clear when warm
- although the smoke does.
It got so bad the other day that it sounded like it'd dropped a cylinder, like a scooby! I had to pull over as it was undriveable but seemed to clear a bit after a couple of mins idling.
Mine is definately not right so i'll be intrigued to find out what your issue is.I've fitted new plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm.
I hope you get it sorted bud, if I figure mine out- i'll let you know
