[Mk2] [Turbo] Starter motor on the way out? Are they all the same? (Turbo&NA)

Post by Dean_82 »

Upon starting my car car the other night I heard a clanging type noise from the engine bay and the car then appeared to run slightly lumpy..
I turnt it off straight away and checked the engine bay, it was dark so nothing was very visible, but I'm pretty sure I smelt a burning, electrical smell. I left the car until the following day. This time it seemed to hesitate to start (first time ever) and once it had started there was a metal on metal /spining kind of sound that seemed constant. It eventually stops, after a couple of minutes. At first I worried it was the turbo, so removed the airfilter etc to look at the turbo and to my untrained eye it seemed in great condition! - Spun freely with no excess play. Phew! The fault search continues...
I started it today from cold and had a good listen and it seems to be coming from the starter motor area? (maybe this explains the electrical smell?) So I was curious to know your opinions. Does it sound like starter motor? And are starter motors the same throughout the Revs NA and Turbo's?

Could be the starter, you could unbolt it to check.

You want to disconnect the battery before the wiring as theres a big power lead held on with a 12 or 13 mm bolt and you wont want that touching the engine or chassis.

Once you have the starter off try and connecting it up to the battery and see if anything out of the ordinary happens. I wouldnt leave it spinning for too long tho.

I have a spare starter motor off a rev2 turbo kicking about if yours is donald duck'd.
We ALL make mistakes !!! :)
