Desperately need help....and a new turbo!

Post by Animal85 »

Hey Guys, happy new year to you all.

2011 has welcomed itself with a cracked turbo. I believe its a standard (CT9 i think).

Just need some advice on the following:

1) Can it be refurbished, and if so is it something i can do myself? there is one on Ebay at the moment with play in the wheel, so is it an easy job just to put mine in?

2) Is it worth getting a different one? - i have found a Td04, will that fit? (isn't it the same one that Imprezas use?)

Any general help would be great. Xmas has left my bank account in the festive red, but all the other decorations have gone. in other words i need to keep it cheap, unless you recommend that its worth up-rating, in which case El Plastic can surface again.

Its a 92 jap import by the way

Thanks

it'll be a ct26 your after, i dont think a td04 will fit without modification.

you could go for a ct20 from a later mr2 93+ or celica st205, better turbo and holds boost right to redline.

i have a ct26 in my bedroom from when i swopped to ct20, ran fine when on the car, only ever been at 12 - 13psi where my car made 250bhp. pm me if your interested.

heres one on ebay too,

Bearing in mind that slapping on an aftermarket turbo isn't going to give you any power gains in itself. You'd need to up the boost to see more power and to do that safely you'd need the supporting mods. With the right supporting mods you can still up the boost with the stock turbo and see good gains.

Best bet if you're skint is to replace the knackered turbo with another stock turbo, in your case a CT26.

Have a search through the forums, this topic has been covered about a million times and theres tons of info on here about getting more power out of rev1/2.

Without going into massive detail the cheapest and fastest way is with bolt on mods like air filter, decat, exhaust, boost increase via a boost controller. Depending on how much you want to increase the boost by you'd need a better intercooler, FCD and on rev1/2 replacing the paper head gasket with a metal one.

Next step after the above is bigger turbo, bigger injectors, different ECU and remap but going down this road is massively expensive and would probably require forged internals depending on your power goals.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell but have a search around the forums.

Apart from the bigger turbo, ecu, injectors etc, I have the rest, so looks like im off to a good start.

Think ill stick to the Ct26 for now, until i know more about them :-)

Thanks

No problem :thumleft:

What kind of boost are you running at the moment? It might be a good time to swap to a CT20b (Rev3+ turbo) as this turbo is slightly bigger than the CT26 and as already mentioned it will hold higher boost to the redline where the CT26 will be running out of puff.

There are a few CT20's on ebay at the moment, but they are for Land Cruisers. Will They fit mine?

The only way to tell what boost you're running is through an aftermarket boost gauge (stock boost gauge is crap and doesn't tell you anything useful) or the digital display from an Electronic Boost Controller (EBC). The EBC control unit, if you've got one, will be in the cabin somewhere.

Don't know for sure but doubt very much that a Land Cruiser CT20 will fit the MR2.

Probably helpful if you could list all the mods on your car that you're sure about. From what you've said I'd take a guess that you've got an air filter, decat and exhaust. If that's the case you're probably better off sticking with a replacement CT26 to get you going again then do a bit of reading up and learn about the car before deciding where you want to go with it from a modding point of view if modding is what you have in mind :thumleft:

I have a boost gauge, but its not electronic.

Japspeed de-cat exhaust, Metal head gasket, Large induction kit, large intercooler with hard pipes and a boost controller. Current turbo is a CT26.

Any ideas what might have caused the crack? Ive had it for about 3 months, and iits always been warmed up and cooled down under my ownership.

Im still waiting for the old turbo to be dropped off so i can see the damage/crack, but it was leaking water
