[Mk2] [Turbo] My car hates the wet

Hey guys,

I have a persisting problem and it only happens when it's wet. Every time i drive in the rain, the car misfires. Especially when i hit a big puddles or heavy rain. Bang bang bang.... flames and pops, and the engine comes to a halt. Takes about 20minutes to get the engine starting again.

I'm getting fuel, which i can smell so i'm assuming i'm getting no spark.

I thought i've solved the problem by renewing the dizzy cap, rotor arm, HT leads and spark plugs. And giving all leads and connectors a good clean. That worked a treat for a month but the problem is back.

Am i missing a trick?

Ive had this for the last 2 days, misfiring under boost and today it stalled and wouldnt start for over 30mins after a mile into my journey. Spoke to somebody in the know who seems to think its ignition related, perhaps the cold weather finished off my 100k mile coil pack?
Dizzy, rotor, plugs, leads are usual suspects im looking at having changed

Ryan, it sounds like you had the same problem. Tho after a heavy down pour last night, i couldn't start the car today. All the usual parts are less than 6months old, i don't understand. It just hates the wet.

I can't just keep on buying dizzy and rotor every 6months.

If it's dry, all is fine.

Silly question guys but have all of you still got your rain tray?? My mr2 use to do the same thing as water run on top and in to the spark plug... Take the ht leads off and see if any water is at the bottom, If so, a stick and tissue to soak it up ( worked for me )

I bet its your coil pack. I had persistant igniton problems whenever there was a hint of moisture in the air. I changed the dizzy, rotor, plugs and leads several times all to no avail. Eventually I was pointed in the direction of the coil. When its cold the plastic casing has a tendancy to crack allowing moisture to find its way in.

Now I know from experience that its a fiddly job, but get you coil pack off and have a look, I'm almost certain thats your issue. You want to get it done soon too. I had a very close call when my Tubby cut out as I exited a junction on a pitch black fen road one evening just beyond a blind bend. Narrowly avoided being hit by a speeding Focus. I think we both shat ourselves!

Yes, well i just priced one up from Toyota and they quoted £90 +vat, ive been advised not to go for a blueprint type as the specialist I use says hes had some fail after a few months. Strange thing is though, you cant buy a dizzy cap separate for Toyota now, so its £450 for a new distributor complete

As for the coil, I think I ordered mine from Camskill so it probably was a Blueprint item, has been fine over the last year (touch wood).

Cracked coil pack. Makes sense, icy cold temperatures and water don't mix, unless you want a bigger crack.

Is there a mod you can do to prevent water from entering the coil pack area? I know that TVR drivers used to use lunch boxes etc to prevent excess water entering the ignition region.

I've noticed that the coil pack is lower than the dizzy, which means water travels down the king lead in/on to the coil pack. Is it possible to relocate it?

Rain tray? Yeah, mines still attached. This happened last year also and i've noticed it helps if you park the car towards the wind, but not all the time. Like i said, i thought i've nailed it by changing the HT leads etc but I ran out of ideas. I never thought it could by the coil tho, i checked for spark but maybe it's too weak. I hate getting electrocuted by a spark plug. lol Just as you think you can let go.... you grip to harder again. D'oh!

i've a mk2 rev2 coil pack car was over 100k but never gave me any ignition problems it's been stored in the house for the best part of 6mnths as the car went 2 scrappy in sky

i had the same problem with my rev2 turbo...

i changed the ignition leads (no luck)
rotor arm and dizzy cap (would start but if i drove on the motorway and it was p1$$ing down after like 45 mins water got somewere and it would stall)
changed the coil pack and all problems have been cured!

and because all the ignition parts are new the car does feel more alive and returns better mpg even sorted out my high emissions

What coil pack is everybody using? 5mm or 7mm?

I looked at my friends MR2, he had a 7mm and it seems that seal is better to the king lead.

Am i able to change to a 7mm coil pack?

where is this coil pack on my rev3 na engine?????? I get jolty moving off when cold and have to rev harder to combat it. plus you mention "rain tray". Is this the rug you get on the lid,? As my dizzy hole no3 always getting filled with rust.

Have you tried spraying the airbox temp sensor (wire end) with wd40. on my rev 3 tubby this was getting wet and would cause the engine to misfire, stall, or not start at all. I left the sensor in the box and gave the wire end a 5 sec spray of wd and no more problem.

rev2 is a 5mm dnt use a 7mm (7 is for a rev1) thats what gave me problems as my leads are 5mm and didnt fit snug in the coil pack..

when i brought a 5mm one of another MR2 member i have been fine.. still need to change it though as its old and i brought it just to test. but still it has sorted my problems
