[Mk2] [NA] 3SGE TO 3SGTE Conversion

Post by cridge »

Im sorry if I have missed this elsewhere but I'm interested to know what I would need to carry out the conversion.
I have recently bought an N/A with a blown engine & want to weigh up my options.

Any help you have will be gratefully viewed
Thank you in advance

Off the top fo my head, you'll need the ECU, Gearbox, Engine, Intercooler, a turbo fuel pump or uprated fuel pump and you'll need the engine loom and chassis loom.

Turbos also have different suspension so I'd be looking for that as well as I'd want it at least as good as how Mr T intended a factory turbo!

I'm sure people will be along to add/correct anything I've missed!

I didnt realise the suspension was different? How so? Is it just uprated shocks & springs or are there further differences with anti roll bars etc.?

Turbos have black Bilstein dampers and sit 5mm lower I believe. It's a straight swap though. Obviously if you have coilovers or anything like that, this doesn't matter. Indeed, you don't HAVE to change the shocks and springs if you're happy as you are, but it's what I'd do.

As for ARBs, I can't remember if the Turbo is thicker or not.

Trying to weigh up the pro's & con's really, I bought the car for £110 & would like to go the turbo route but the wifes due in April so I can either go the slow & proper route or the quick & cheap one - the trouble is - I'm quite impatient!

I know the feeling!

I'm currently building a new car and it's been on the go since September. I'm fed up and want to drive it and enjoy it, but budget restraints have slowed it down.

What revision is the car you've bought?

You'd also need a Turbo exhaust as the N/A is different! Rev 1 and 2 engines are quite cheap. Obviously the Rev 3 is a bit better out of the box, with a bit more mpg and more power.... depends what you want for it really.

Best thing you can do is buy an na engine and swop them over to get it running, sell it and buy a proper turbo. You can buy 3sge engines for around £150 maybe a bit less.

Rev1 turbos are around £1200 upwards, a lilttle more for rev2's, and rev3's seem to start at £2500, without needing much or any work.

Theres a couple of the ebay at the moment, in Essex and Cornwall. If you can get them to stick it on a pallet, then delivery will be around £70-£80.

I collected a turbo engine myself once in the back of my octavia estate, was a mission. It had the gearbox, boxes of parts and full exhuast system too....and an engine hoist !

buy a toyota camry and use that engine, you can pick a car up for £400-500

then you'd have a V6, similar performance to a rev2 turbo but ubber reliable (which is something you wont hear about an mr2 turbo)

To mix it all up a little - how about an M-42?
