New member, also new to Japanese cars!

Post by PhillT »

Hi everyone,

I've been into my Volkswagons for years, mostly Corrado's and Mk1 golfs.. but I've been fed up with them recently, I've owned pretty much everything from Land rover Defenders to BMW 7 series but never brought myself a Japanese car! I sold my Calibra (what a lemon they are!!) and fancied something different

So, on friday I picked up this '91 MR2 GT T-Bar

It's by no means perfect, but it's been well looked after and was a good price with a years MOT.. although after the 150 mile drive home, I'm a little unsure if it should REALLY have an MOT on it!

there's a few minor issues it should of failed on IMO, there's a minor exhaust leak and a slight bit of play in the steering! [-X nothing I can't fix though!

but after driving it I'm becoming obsessed with it! 8) love driving it that much that I'm planning of giving it some TLC just as long as it behaves itself over the next few months... I've even started thinking of building up a new lump over winter to throw in (although I've still got a corrado in the garage mid conversion! lol) if one comes up at the right time and the right price

Anyway, I'm sure that's enough of an intro.. looking forward to learning about the car and getting to know you guys, hope you don't get fed up with the questions

It looks better in the pics  there's a few issues with the paint on the spoiler where someone went over it with a mop and burnt it and there's a couple of tiny rust bubbles on the roof but I'm hoping to get it sorted soon

was £800 with a new MOT and 6 months tax so I can live with having to put in some work as overall I'm very happy with it :D

have to admit I don't think I'll be keeping it completely standard, as much as I love the shape, I think there's a couple of areas with room for improvement

probably going to go for the rev3 back end, clear indicators and something with the front bumper.... maybe change the spoiler too but seriously considering building a new lump to put in when winters past

Thanks for reading guys :thumleft:

Hello and welcome. Another person crossed over from VW's like myself. People thought I was mad to break my golf and get an MR2 but they are so much more fun, and will only get better with plans too lol.

Only a little younger than mine that goes, steers, stops and rides better than ever at 210,000 (well alright I have lied about the ride). Sort the bodywork and obvious service and tlc then mod as parts wear ... Had mine 11yrs plus and been err, refreshing it for the last 5.
Great cars, welcome to ownership.

R.

Pics in my garage of how mine now looks from the same uk rev1 n/a t-bar start point.

Hi, welcome along. I have only recently joined here as well, and also in Reading.

There seem to be a few mr2's around the place.

:thumleft: Thanks for all the welcomes guys

not been on here in a couple of weeks

well I fitted some clear indicators to tranform the front end a bit and got new balljoints and track rods waiting to go on

it must know I'm spending money on it though as the ignition coil has given up the ghost (at least, I hope! no spark from king lead so it's gotta be that!)

nice to know I'm not the only one that's stepped over from VW's :D

If you going to work on it, here is a link which may prove to be advantageous. I cannot comment on the legality of the contents of the website, in so far as I do not know if they are allowed to produce the information, so you use at your own risk:

http://manual.teq.org/

This contains links for the manuals for wiring diagrams, repair manuals etc for the MK2 MR2, but also for the Celica - which runs the same N/A engine.

HTH.

Good luck with the repairs. Am often up at Bracknell, so if you need a hand or anything, give a shout :thumleft:

:thumleft: Thanks for the offer and link

got a new ignition coil through the other day, couldn't put it on quick enough and thankfully with a little cough it fired straight up and has been running smoother so I guess the coil has been slowly on it's way out for a while

next job is suspension, but seeing as it's pretty much the same cost for standard as a good coilover set it'd be rude to go for standard

just waiting for enough pennies, hopefully in jan

welcome matey.. Ive got a VW and a MR2.. :thumleft:

There are quite a few MR2's in reading as my old one went that way too although he sold it about a year ago.

As much fun as hot hatches and the like are (Golf GTi's etc) you cant beat a mid engine RWD for pure driving adrenalin!
