The arrow was precision driving! You missed the one where I caught a barrel with a front wheel, nearly broke my wrist, did knock the tracking out a little but nothing too worrying.

We've got to get the car up and running for the end of the month now, Slaters Stages are the last Sunday of Feb at Trac Mon. Anglesey is a lot more suited to the MR2. I will be co-driving this time, Cogboy is usually a lot more sideways than I am, and we are a bad influence on each other when we rally together. Forget the pace notes its more 'yehaaa' or 'give her dixie'!!!

Never get a rally car that stands out, everyone wants to know about it! I don't mind talking to people about it but not with a mic and camera in my face.

On the stage at fleetwood, loving the placement of the sign. Damn....... so I can't sue Blackpool council for the damage to my front wing and tracking!

Been watching this thread with interest, that rally car looks awesome and I love the lights.

I'm guessing there's a few people like myself thinking of going six speed with the C160 box for ease of install, sounds like a great way of pepping up an old 4AGE but am I right in saying there dead rare. I think I have to change my clutch soon and I'd love to do the gearbox at the same time but can you get them from anywhere over here?

Yes a C160 would be a doddle, finding one might not be though. We didn't really look for a 160, just jumped in at the deep end with a 64.

Ooo, ooo, ooh! The other reason we went for the Lotus C64 was because it came out of a mid-engined application, so all the selector mechanisms were in the correct places, we could use the Exige shifter, and the gear selector cables and the driveshafts were roughly the correct length. The Elise/Exige has a very similar track to the Mk1 MR2. Slightly wider, but we needed longer driveshafts and the Lotus ones are 'Perfick.'

I'm probably asking a silly question here as I'm not the expert you are but will the C64 fit with MR2 driveshafts and clutch etc?

The MR2 clutch fits straight on as the splines on the input shaft on the gearbox are identical, but the Mk1 MR2 driveshafts don't fit the diff.

We used the inner CVs that came with the gearbox - their shafts are larger diameter than the MR2. They're probably Toyota CVs anyway, but what we ended up with is a combo of the 'Lotus' inner CV joints and the Lotus driveshafts turned down and re-splined to fit the MR2 outer CVs.

To fit the C64 onto a 4AGE the bellhousing side of the gearbox casing has to be swapped for a C50/52. This creates a problem though as the clutch fork then interferes with the gear selector mechanism. We solved this by junking the standard arrangement and using a concentric hydraulic slave cylinder.

I don't know if the C160 would be any easier to fit - was it ever put onto a 4AGE? Anyone out there know?

The C160 is an easy fit I think but needs a hole drilling for the shift cables to come out of. I spoke to Fensport yesterday and they said they'd only ever seen 2 C160's so I can't see me getting hold of one easily.

Is fixing the driveshafts for the C64 a simple job to do, i.e. could a decent backstreet garage do it for me?

A half decent engineering shop would be able to. We had a company called 'Timmick Precision Engineering' in Runcorn machine our driveshafts. The driveshafts are hardened and they had to use a solid carbide cutter and cut the new splines 10,000ths of an inch at a time. One of the engineers told me, "If those shafts had been any harder we'd have been f***ked." It cost £300 to have them turned down and re-splined.

We've just converted a Corolla T-sport 6 speed box for Aw11 use (with the 2zz-ge engine too i hasten to add) using part Mk1 selector assembly and a few custom parts. We also added the Mk3 LSD unit and 6th gear assembly from the Mk3 as it had better ratios.

What do you know about getting a 2ZZ upto around 2000cc Mr Woods?

Could it be done economically with parts from Mr T?

2zz stroker kit

Post by bwrc »

There are several people that supply kits to increase the capacity of this engine (eg Monkeywrench Motorsport) in the States and TODA Racing. All seen very expensive though and have to be imported.

Seven Motorsport in Coventry do a complete half engine ie crank rods pistons flywheel all assembled and balanced for about £3500 and even a modified head with uprated cams etc for £1500. So a complete bare engine for about £5000. still expensive coz you need all the fuel injection bits and exhaust manifolds.

Essentially this capacity increase relies on fitting the longer throw 1zz crank into the 2zz block (probably needs a combination of 1zz and 2zz thrust washers and bearings and a 1zz flywheel) However I've not been able to find out which rods and pistons work or whether custom parts are required.

There are other hybrid engines that have been created ie the 7age so it should be possible to combine Mr T parts here as well.

If anyone has more info please come forward and share with us

To get my c160 (I'm in Australia) required buying a half-cut from Japan : '99 Trueno BZR. I don't know if they were ever sold in Europe.
The half-cut came with the bonus of a 20v (blacktop) engine as well . Gearbox conversion to RWD (using Toyota parts rather than gutting the c52) was a cinch. I posted a write-up on the conversion on 2brutal : link, which is a copy of my original conversion thread on toymods : link

News just in.

We've just (deal done yesterday, collecting next Friday) got hold of a new engine ready for the 2011 season. A rebuild and bike TBs was planned with an estimated cost of £2k (doing most of the work ourselves as usual) but we found an engine that was irresistible!

Did anyone spot it on eBay?

Full race spec build by Dave Brooks, 193bhp, Jenvey ITBs and OMEX600 ECU. Runs like a standard engine but revs and sounds like a superbike. I can't wait to get it in the MR2 and take it for a blast.
