[Mk2] [NA] Oil Light

Post by sangyboymr2 »

I have an issue with the oil light that keeps coming on on the dash which started happening last week all of a sudden. It's the orange one directly below the 9 on the rev counter. I've found that it will come on for a few seconds the go again a few seconds later, sometimes when I brake.

Having looked in the manual it says check oil, which I did and if anything there is a bit too much oil in it. It was serviced in July and had a full oil change including the filter.

I haven't noticed any change in the engine or feel of it when driving, so i am guessing it is just due to the drop in tempreture suddenly we have had, but apart from that I don't know what it could be.

I mostly drive for about an hour at a time and it will come on up to 5 times.

Any ideas or suggestions? It's just getting a bit annoying now if anything. I hate seeing warning lights on my dash display, it gives me a sick feeling in my gut!!

As you say, it's the oil level light for the sump. There is a sender unit in the sump which is notorious for playing up/failing.

My advice? Disconnect the sender. If the light stays on bridge the connector on the wiring loom, if not, don't! (can't remember which way around it works). Then just check your oil level on a regular basis.

Works on oil pressure I believe. Could be two things as opposed to what the others have said:

Oil level is low, have you checked this yet?

Oil pump could be on the way out. Can't really think of a way to test this other than taking it apart...

Mine eventually stayed on all the time or almost all the time...by passed it in the end and I check the oil (every few weeks when I remember) which doesn't seem to go down! I was quoted £300+ at Toyota for the part. Get it checked if in doubt I suppose...

For me it is better to check the oil level occasionally than spend £300+ . Just my experience...

Before you get all critical I'd suggest you re-read the opening post and you'd see this thread is NOT about the oil pressure warning light but is about the oil level warning light, something which is notoriously unreliable on many cars not just the MR-2, so much so the majority of cars don't have an oil level warning light at all, so I cannot see the problem with rigging it so it doesn't light up at all. Rigging the oil pressure light would be foolish though.

I have this issue myself, and I have thought is may be worthwhile taking the sender out when I next do an oil change and a good clean with parts cleaner.

I don't think (although I'm not certain) that you can remove the sender without removing the sump itself.
