[Mk2] [NA] Clutch slipping...... sometimes???

Post by TheBaker »

Lately it seems my clutch has been slipping(at about 3000rpm in any gear rev needle flys up with no increase in power and then goes back down, then the powe comes, if the pedal is held down) the past month or so...

But yesterday and today when I got in the car for the first time, It pulled normally(felt good 8) ) with no slipping at all?? However, after the first drive it had each day(15 minutes or so) and it was left to sit and when I went back to it the clutch would be slipping again? :?

Is this normal? The only real difference has been the crap weather and all the rain.. when I come to think about it, sometimes after washing the car, it would pull like normal again...

I'm not even certain if it is the clutch slipping but the symptoms do seem to be that(and I was told by a mechanic last , what else could it be?

One theory I had is since I have a pretty bad oil leak(from somewhere up at the rocker cover, not sure where, maybe the silicon seal has gone) it could be leaking down and somehow, into the clutch casing? And then the water has washed it off... sounds like bull$h1t, probably is.. I don't know.

Any ideas? Could water somehow be affecting it? :S

Only other thing I've thought of could be the throttle cable but I don't know if that could be at fault.

Cheers. :)

(yes the clutch will be replaced when i can afford it. : ) )

Bump, it seems to be fine when I drive it for the first time each day, but then starts slipping again shortly after, so it seems like heat is affecting it(now) for some reason..

Anyone know what might be going on?

Not had this on the MR2 but had it on an another car, It was the crank oil seal weaping.. Would only slip once every few weeks and gradually got worse as the oil leak got worse.

May not be the cause in this case but if it gets worse it might be worth looking into.

Mine is suffering from similar symptoms at the moment.

Have enquired how much a new clutch is... £480 fitted :(

Got the money for it from a few ebay auctions and am booking it in to be looked at. Hopefully they will tell me the clutch is ok and just needs minor work!

Got the cambelt to do in the next 20,000 kms so could do without spending all that money on it.

On a side note, would it be worth getting the cambelt done at the same time as the clutch? Would that save on man hours or not? :?

480 fitted? that's around the same quotes I got from local garages, one was insisting engine needs to come out lol! Toyota asked for 200 for the clutch alone and 8 manhours :PP

Contact someone in your area who does mr2's, like Luke (Skywalker), I paid around 250 all in for mine.
If it starts to slip, it will need replacing..mine was slipping only ocasionally at full boot but there was no meat on it at all! Important, if you will be doing this, insist on driveshaft seals being replaced - they cost 10 quid or so from toyota but will save you a headache in the end..
Cambelt is a different job and it's always worth doing it when you're close to 60k miles / 5 years.. but it's not going to save you time by doing it at the same time as the clutch.

This maybe a curve ball but - does this happen with the clutch depressed? Try it - it might not be your clutch at all

You mention wet weather - cant see why a clutch would pick rainy days to slip?

.... maybe electrial? visually check the ground and alternator as an easy starter
