I would love a pair of after market seats but i've read most of the seat rails make the seats sit higher than stock rails.

Is this the case?

i read that side mounted seats can sit lower if required, thats what im hoping, i managed to get a set of base mounted ones (not fixed buckets though) to sit at stock height, so it should be possible

these are proving interesting to fit, i cut the std mr2 slides off the sts seats i had to see how they would 'sit' on them, too high, so the next genius idea i had was to bolt them through the floor having them sit just behind the cross member, they do sit lower obviously and the leg length is ok for me, but as the floor isnt flat id have to cut out the std rear seat mount points out of the floor, and im not in a hurry to do this.

So ill make a few calls tomorrow about cobra custom mounts for the mr2, they cam with sliders so an ideal thing to do is to cut off the little bits on the std runners (the parts that you put the bolt through) and weld them on to the cobra runners - hey presto custom mr2 fitment, oh wait i dont have a welder - still it might be just as cost effective to do this - buy a welder i mean instead of the mounts, at least ill have a welder to use again.

i dont think having another look at it ill gain anything by buying custom runners, it certainly wont be any lower, im going to buy a 2m length of 60mm x 5mm ally flat bar and make 4 brackets (2 per seat) and bolt the cobra sliders which are attached to the side mounts to them, if i need to lower the seat then ill have to cut a section out of the side mount and drop it down, if i were to drop them on the side mounts now then it would foul the side harness slot.

sorr fella, just saw your reply,

i can certainly ask, mine were customer made as i have to use a side mount seat ideally for the Championship, so they were made by the otherhalfs dad to suit me

i can get him to make up some more ill ask how much he wants for them,

they were made of 5mm thick mild steel, you may have to drill out the holes to mount the seat to your requirements.

Cheers

its ok im cracking on with some that will bolt in the std locations and have the sliders that are bolted to the side mounts, however after alot of p1ssing around today i have had enough, ill try again tomorrow.

The slider is coming back and hitting the rear mount bolt so ill need to space them up a little to clear, also they are sitting a little high so ill need to drop them down on the side mounts - which means cutting a section out of them as they will hit the plastic side harness slots, still be worth it in the end ](*,)

I'm trying to fit some Sparco's onto the stock seat rails too. Not full buckets though, kind of mickey mouse seats in comparison.

I'm planning to use 25mmx12mm mild steel flat running across the old rails, then bolts the new seat to that (bottom mount).

12mm that will be fun cutting it, i used 4mm on my old seats i am using 60 x 5 alumium this time i need it that wide to shift the seat over away from the door card. I will say that any seats wider that mine at the shoulder 'wings' will be a very tight fit

I'm just paranoid that if I crash, the seats will fall off the rails :pale:

Probably overkill......

I thought that too today, I'm fitting Willans 5/6 points, so even if the seat does come off the rails, it will be held in by the harnesses shackled to the car. Unfortunately, I will be subjected to the squeezing forces of the seat trying to leave the car.........

Still watching your thread with interest, as I am finding the fitting of the seats a right pain.

As for cutting 12mm steel, I find an angle grinder is very effective.....

12mm is err overkill by a big margin haha but fair play too you

you would be best using 4-5mm thick mild steel, i say mild steel as aposed to stainless as its easier to work with

im selling my current setup in favour of a new lighter GRP seat  8)

My main concern is with flex. The four mounting points on the bottom of my new seats sit inside the track of the rails by about 6cm each.

I am planning to fit my original rails, then bolt/weld two pieces of 12mm steel across the rails. The new seats will then attach to the mild steel.

Will see how it goes over the weekend as long as my metal stock arrives :)
