I think it only becomes illegal if it goes smaller than the sizes given.
however I had a narrower and shorter LEGAL plate with 6 charecters
'TRD 180' I was able to make it smaller because it had only 6 letters but still had the right cm requirement on all borders and correct spacing.

As long as they conform to BS-AU standards (correct size/font) and have this marked on the plate along with post code of manufacturer on them, they will be legal. (Require V5 and MOT for this I believe)

The front number plate holder takes a 7'' width plate perfectly. Fits it like a glove.

Just look up the rules on direct.gov for what you can / can't have on plates and there's no ambiguity. I believe the BS number requirement was revoked earlier in the year now or summit like that, last time I looked.

Import plates

Post by cosmos »

I chose 13x6.5 these plates unlike the english variety can help stop flying objects heading for your radiator!!!More importantly unlike the english MR2 imports can legally use motorcycle size numbers and letters there is nothing worse than big english digits!!!!!!!!!!You could make some alloy backplates and sticky pad those new plates on, there is nothing worse than big ugly english self tappers (screws) on display........

Import Plates

Post by cosmos »

Well i suppose technically they are all imports as they were all built in Japan but the official English models require the letter box plates with English digits to conform to our laws. Whereas the unofficial personel imports (turbo/g limited)qualify for motorcycle size digits that resemble the country of origin Japans own ruling on size.
British digit sizes must be the largest the world has ever seen???imo.
