If we wanted to convert our 3S-GTE to a

"stronger" block design, one of the options is to get a Camry 2.2 engine

(say a 1998 car).

But has anyone actually done this?

Can anyone shed some light on the list of mods needed to achieve this?

Is it a taller block?
Will all the ancilliaries all bolt up ok?
I understand the Oil Cooler is different.

The Flywheel is different too.

But does the 3S-GTE head just

"bolt on"?
Gearbox and Clutch

(to a Camry Flywheel)?

I appreciate there will be differences and maybe we can modify the block to suit its just I would really appreciate a list of the issues to assess if its a go-er or not

Off the top of my head.

The block height is the same as the 3s,
Sometimes all the bolt holes are there for the ancillaries, sometimes you need to drill and tap the castings for them.

(usually the driveshaft carrier bracket/alternator and knock sensor)
The easiest route is to use the 5s oil cooler and hard pipes.

The 5s flywheel is junk and you'd use a 3s flywheel/clutch.

If using the oem flywheel then the holes would need elongating/machining out, but some of the aftermarket flywheels already have this done to fit, fidanza does i believe.

(this is all if your planning to use the 5s crank of course).

Just get a 3s headgasket and check the oil and water ways match up on the block, if not just drill the water ways out.

The 5s blocks dont have oil squirters, but can be machined to accept them if desirable.

You'll also need to tap and plug the oil feed for the balance shaft assembly if your not going to use it.

As far as i know thats all i had to do.

Once you get the block infront of you its all pretty basic stuff and common sense.

HTH.
