[Mk2] [Turbo] High Flow Oil and Water Pumps

Post by Shmed »

Are they needed on a 400-500 bhp track car?

I know (from using the search) that Nathan's drag car used stock pumps, but I'm not looking to drag my car, and tbh I imagine a day on the track is harder on the oil/cooling system thatn a drag run?!

Need to know asap please as I am about to order my engine bits, and need to decide whether to go for a new OEM item, or uprated.

Thanks All

I think a stock water pump is fine but if you intend to surpass the stock rev limit which i presume you will with a 500bhp car then you will want to be looking at a high volume aftermarket oil pump.

The 3sgte oil pump will always be able to provide enough flow no matter what the rpm.

Good stuff, cheers all, I've ordered a new oem oil and water pump. Gav, I'm aiming to rev around the same, so I'll keep an eye out for your 'my car has blown up' thread so I know if you are right ;)

Yeah, im in the parts aquisition phase, seems that I just buy everything and decide whether I need it later....

Ordered all my engine internals the other day so should be able to start building soon. I'll hopefully get round to a build thread too!

The rev3 pump is a bit more reliable than the rev 1/2 IIRC ... a popular option for the rev 1/2 was the Chris K pump .. dont know if its still available.

I would imagine that a stock pump should do you fine. Its only really high RPM where std pumps have issues.

Gaz 9krpm is getting there! I would have though that much more than that and you'd be getting cavitation issues... which you certainly don't want!

Hey there nathen how's it going bud, yeah think 9k is pritty much the limitsi will probably keep it to a modest 8500k just to be on the safer side, what pump did you run and what was you rev limit set too?

I was just goin to go with a a 35R with a/r of 1.06 see how far it would let me take it lol I would be happy with 8k if I can go higher all the better :) one thing I thort I would ask is did you go with a shimless bucket conversion on your head?

Cool! That will be a rev monster with that exhaust housing ;)

I just ran rev 3 shim under bucket followers ... with the head being off every 5 mins and valves seats being re cut the clearance always changed for it was far easier (and cheaper) to get a new shim than get a new bucket!

Thats the plan bud, that will to show those crazy turbo vtec's a thing or two

If only i had that oppertunity there simply isnt enough time in the day, i will probably go shimless buckets after its been run in

Im looking into the jun 272 highlift cams, im running Hks 264's at the moment but want to push the power band up as much as poss, iv spoken to alot of 2 owners about the Hks 272's being impossible to set up 100% correctly, im taking a punt on the jun's being better deisghned have you hurd anyone run juns before?
