the rear spoiler is next to useless

Don't forget that all that info is only based on airflow coming directly from the front of the car and flowing to the rear of the car and does not take into account airflow travelling across the car when cornering or from high cross winds. Under the latter circumstances the rear spoiler may have an influence on rear end stability.

If your running straight up the strip in a drag race though I'd junk it.

From what I remember from various sources the rear spoiler was intended to have a dual purpose. One was as above, crosswind stability and the other was to act in conjunction with the rear window visor to create a low pressure area above the engine bay cover, this is to assist the airflow from under the car up through the engine compartment, thereby improving the cooling in the engine compartment.
