New Battery time

Post by JMR_AW11 »

What's the current best option for a new battery for my mk1?

My options appear to be

Toyota OEM Battery (I'm guessing it will be £75)
Halfords £75 or £89
Battery Megastore 56068 battery £55 (local supplier but possibly dodgy quality?)

Is there a better option? I don't want to order online unless delivery is <24hrs.

Thanks :)

Started my car for the first time in 2 weeks last night, started straight up easy. Halfords Calcium highly recommended.

When I used to work for Toyota, their Optifit range of batteries were very well priced. I'd give your local dealer a try. :thumleft:

Halfords are seriously overpriced for batteries as it seems most people are unaware that it's possible to buy them elsewhere.

Case in point, I recently needed a new battery for my Galant. Got a branded one (think it was Exide) from Euro Car Parts for £50 or so. Had a quick look next time I was in Halfords and they wanted £90 for one of their standard ones.

cheers for the replies :)

I did try phoning the Toyota dealer in Cheltenham earlier today but they couldn't tell me the price and said they would call back.

But they didn't call back...

I'm hoping to get my red mk1b back on the road this weekend after a layoff.

I've not been able to drive it properly since my bike accident but now I'm hoping I can cope with the unassisted steering again without neck problems.

I've been driving a Ford Focus 1.6 for about a year now and the MR2 has only seen the road once in all that time... :(

I did some research before buying mine and found that the Halfords was a stronger battery at 600ah, also the only calcium I could find.

Just got through to the correct parts dept in Cheltenham (Listers)

Very helpful and the Battery is £60

Also a full set of 4 rear brake pads for a late mk1b (does both rear wheels) is £49

The prices include VAT :D and aren't that bad. As I need to get an oil filter (£9) I'll get the whole lot from Mr T.

I did once have to get a battery replaced under warranty from Toyota and they were fine about it. No haggling or questions, they just gave me a new battery over the counter so that figures in my choice too :)

Is that a normal price? or with discount (I'm after one too)

Pretty sure it was the normal price. The battery is black, made in Spain and has neat foldaway carry handles built into the top section.

The only gripe is that it is slightly taller (4mm taller?) than the old battery and therefore the screw down bar across the top of the battery doesn't screw down fully at the rear. I checked and there is no packing anywhere that might make it sit higher.

It also span the engine crazy fast... much faster than any other battery on this car and I've fitted a few new batteries to this car since 1994.
