Super Red T-bar NA Mk2 - Project Tidy

Post by smallia16 »

I've had quite a few cars over the last couple of years from run arounds to reasonably nice cars... nothing spectacular mind.
I had a Williams Clio last year and loved it to bits, smashed it, hard, repaired it, including extensive chassis work! Spent thousands to repair it, only to find the love had gone, and sold it to my friend for a tiny amount, I've been using a little citroen ax dubut 954cc for the past 6 months whilst i decided what i wanted next.

A couple of months ago i was looking at ford focus's and similar cars, something reliable and practical but that was modifiable... and then got fed up and thought... I've always wanted an MR2, got a quote on insurance for a UK model GT T-bar and was pleasantly surprised, having just reached 21, the quote came back at little more than a 1.8 ford focus... bargain, so i browsed ebay for a gt t-bar...

2 days later i was off to Bristol to view a totally standard red GT with t-bar roof, had a look and a wee test drive and realised this is definately the type of car for me! After going throuhg all the details, i learned it had no tax but was ex cat c so had very recently gone through a vic test and MOT... so not too bad i thought. Had a dent in the side of the car... other than that and the wheels being corroded and the usual faded red paint it was very nice.

The auction ended 2 days later with me winning the car for £425.99 if memory serves.
So i took it home, and started to evaluate the dent, it popped out to a much lesser extent but almost looked worse so i then got to work smoothing it...

I realised after a while it was never going to be perfect, so decided to just go for it and masked and painted it...

Looked terrible so i re-sanded and re-painted... although nowhere near perfect it does look much better than before so am happy for now.

In this time i have also fitted rev 3+ black lexus lights and smooth rear panel (painted black), with a red mr2 lady sticker ( ;) ) lol. Also purchased some 18" wheels which will be going on shortly at least for the time being and some clear front indicator/side light lenses which will be going on when they arrive.
I have also replaced pads all round and re-greased the rusty sliders ( took out sanded rust off, dug out the crap from inside the slider mounting holes and re-greased, refitted!
Started to debadge also, as can be seen in pics, sorry no pics from when i origionally got it, and the ebay ad has been removed :(

Hoping to wash, t-cut, polish and wax, and colour code all side trim and front lip before it goes on the road. Insuring and taxing it on the first of august if all goes to plan :)

Thanks for reading, much more to come hopefully..

All comments and criticism welcome.

Last couple of days been keeping myself busy, wheel nuts and clear crystal fronts arrived wednesday so fitted the wheels and crystals then, yesterday went to halfords and picked up some t-cut and turtle wax ice wax kit ( i think) and associated clothes :) so that'll keep me busy over the weekend!
Spoke to my insurance company today so am now insured on the mr2 as of 1st august and renewal on the 20th is taken care of :)

in this pic you can see where the arch is still far from perfect but it'll do for now, eventually i'll get it done properly!

Forgot to mention, this is a rev 2 N/A UK model :)

got some clear side repeaters on the way now, and hopefully get the side trims and front lip colour coded over weekend too
