Anyone know this car?

Post by Harold »

Hello,

Spotted this mr2 turbo on pistonheads that looks pretty tidy. Does anyone know it\the owner?

http://pistonheads.com/sales/1738355.htm

And can anyone think of a good reason why it would have had an engine rebuild? I thought the 3s-gte was a pretty solid engine, it's not even done that many miles.

Thanks muchly.

**EDIT**
Link Added - I'm an idiot.

Givehim a call adn find out why it wa rebuilt then come back here and let us know to see how realistic the explanation sounds.

Says in the ad that it's had the block honed so my money would be on piston ring or ringland failure (more likely ringland as it's had the pistons replaced not just the rings). Could be as simple as putting low grade fuel in the car causing excessive detonation?

Yep, was going to say if you go have a look, check for signs of a boost controller having been fitted at some point. That would explain it.

my rev3 had a shattered ringland on piston 3 at 60,000 miles.

it happened with the previous owner - the actuator tubes looked original... I was never really sure of the exact cause

I got away with just honing the bores, as no damage to them.

I've since read a lot of this failure on GT4 and MR2 sites - surprised the OP hasn't picked up on this?

But this does seem to be the most common failing - otherwise the 3S-GTE seems pretty tough
