[Mk2] [Turbo] Oil Leak

Post by pulsarmark »

Just changed the clutch and flywheel on my 91 turbo following one of the online guides.

When the flywheel was removed had a visual inspection of the rear main oil seal and all look well so i left it well alone.

After putting the car back together left it running for 2 minutes and it started losing engine oil over the floor #-o

The oil is leaking from what looks like between the engine and tranny and dripping from the sump.

I have removed the flywheel inspection cover and can see no oil inside gearbox casing or on flywheel, So i assume the leak is either from sump gasket or rear main oil seal. "Please be sump!!"

My question is .......... If the rear main oil seal is leaking would the flywheel not be covered in oil?
The car only leaks after it has been running for a few minutes.

Many Thanks

just looked at my engine (its on a build stand in the garage) and i would say yes, if that main crank seal was leaking you would prob see oil on the back of the flywheel... it could be leaking through the ali plate that the oil seal is sat in, that has a U shaped gasket and if the bolts are not tight enough it may leak from there.
