Wheel Wobble/Vibration

Post by Sideways Si »

Hi Everyone..

I've had my front wheels balanced perfectly but i stll get a fair bit
of wobble/vibration coming through to the steeering, about 70-80 it's the worst..

Could anyone tell what the next thing to look at would be?.

Thanks

Could it be that one of your wheels are buckled? Are they OEM or after market wheels etc?

I had a very similar problem, had them balance perfectly a good few times but could never get rid of the wobble at about 70 but after I had new wheels fitted yesterday the car is fine now...

thankyou for replying..

They are Aftermarket Volks Rays. Now that you've said that, I do suspect knackered Rims.

When One garage says they can't be balanced and then another said they balanced fine..

I was in two minds. I'll try to find someone who may be able to straighten them out..

Are they hub centric? They could be perfectly balanced but if they are not centred on the hub when fitted you will get wobble

I've had a similar issue with mine although it appeared to just come from the nearside. Felt very dangerous when at speed. Had mine balanced at a garage and they said it could be my suspension. They were idiots though! I think we've now established it's the steering rack which LewisJay is fitting for me on wed. i'll keep u posted.

Do you have spigot rings fitted?

If the rims werent originally ordered to MR2 spec they might have a slightly wider centre bore than you want (just a millimetre or two out). As a result, you get a vibration at speed.

Spigot rings give you a tight fit onto the hub, problem cured.

Just pull a wheel off, measure the "hole" with calipers, then measure the hub and see if they match.

Your wheels might be fine, could be your brakes- one of your disks could be slightly warped....could be wear in a ball joint, or even one of your outer steering arms :-k Lots of things to check after the wheels....have you got another pair of wheels you could try it on to see if the problem goes away?

I've got another set of wheels that I Could try, but they need a set of road legal tyres on to test them..So I'll need to have all the front end checked over before i pay expense like that

Mine had the same wobble.

I put on a virtually brand new set of alloys with new tyres freshly balanced and pumped up and it's now smooth all the way to the top.

In my opinion the older the wheel the more likely it is that it's slightly buckled.

Thankyou for all your replies to this thread, The general consensus points to buckled alloys..

They were already on the car when I purchased it, so I can't say what may have happened to them before I owned it, also
I did some homework, and it turns out that a new set would cost me in the region of £2400.. :pale:

So.. I'll most likely try & get them refurb'd if there buckled.
(assuming that's even possible)

Thanks to all.

I had a couple of buckled alloys repaired by Wheels In Motion, think it was about £60 each.
