mk2 rev3 n/a MOT failure on emissions

Post by kayjay0_7 »

took my 2 in today for it's MOT and failed on emissions  :crybaby:

Image

the garage recon that the cat is not operating correctly but this was replaced last year (jap-spec performance one)

have been to see Luke at Pacific Works and he had a quick look over her and suggested i replace the Distributor ,Rotor Arm and plugs (i have a new set of TRD leads fitted) after checking the fault codes and finding none

anyone have any other suggestions on what to look for

thanks

Mine failed almost identically - too high CO levels (0.871% in my case). Like you been told it is probably the cat at fault. Am hoping if i replace it then i will get a pass. I know it is likely something else at fault but without total guesswork then i would not know where to start and dont want to just throw money at the car that i do not have at the moment. Watching this thread with interest...

Have a look at this info - it might help:

Mine failed initially but I changed the spark plugs (they were not the correct ones for my engine) and the air filter. Seems I have an old/slow lambda as when it eventually kicked in on my retest the limits came down.

Looks like incomplete combustion hence the recommendations on the ignition.

People told me it was he CAT but this turned out to be fine.

Make sure your engine is well warmed up prior to the test.

Good luck.

Doubt its the cat.

Just put the rev 3 na im selling for its mot and it wasnt far off passing with a decat fitted. The tester claimed he has had mr2 nas pass with no cat fitted.

Give it a quick service and take it back :thumleft:

i have ordered up a new set of plugs ,distributor cap and rotor arm from Toyota as well as a new lamda sensor (cat replaced last year with a jap spec performance one) which i will be fitting on Saturday
then book the 2 in again for a retest (lets hope she passes)

incomplete combustion = a black sooty exhaust

and found on the net "Black soot usually indicates a rich fuel mixture or incomplete burning of the air/fuel mixture. When I see this the first thing I recommend is a complete tune-up with new distributor cap, distributor rotor and spark plugs"

that's were my problem lies then (she doesnt use (burn) oil)

From what I read when doing mine it is often a small amount of unburnt fuel causing the problem.

Start with the cheaper things as you are doing to make sure the ignition is spot on. Changing the cat would be a last resort. Mine initially failed much worse than yours. I only had to change the spark plugs & air filter. I suspect the lambda though as initially on the retest the results were still high until the lambda suddenly kicked in and they came right down. Try that next if the ignition parts don't cure your problem.
