Talking torque wrenches

Post by Delgado-Go! »

Hello,

Been trying to get together bits n bobs of important kit and keep coming across the importance of a torque wrench.

Pretty much sold on the halfords one since they seem to have a decent response but I'm confused by the different Nm measurements.

I only want to buy one! Is there a particular NM range that will cover all areas required on the MR2? I'm hoping I'll only need one Torque wrench cos at £60 a pop it ain't a cheap tool!

Also just found out about Halfords trade discount... WTF! how much saving! Wonder if my mate who buys and sells cars would be able to get one?

Go to screwfix! Or order from Screwfix.com

They sell a torque wrench the same as halfords one for MUCH less.
In a much appreciated move, a guy working FOR halfords actually offered up this information to me a few years ago when I was looking for one!

The wrench your talking about will cover most common things.
There are some specific applications that require a lower range, but I would cross that bridge as/when/if you ever come to it - and get the screwfix one in the meantime.

P.S. Here's the link... even cheaper than the eBay one!

You need 2 mate. For regular maintenance 10-60nm but once you start on suspension you need up to 250nm. I could not find one that covered the full range.

Just my 2p - I would go for a spring beam torque wrench rather than the clicker type. Their simplicity also means they are actually very accurate.

The main advantage with a spring beam is that you can see the torque level your currently tightening too, where with a clicker your at the mercy of the mechanism and if that isn’t properly calibrated or decided its having a bad day then your going to over or under tighten. You will never have this issue with the spring beam.

They both do the same job just in 2 different ways, but 1 is considerably safer and wont fail. Having had 2 rod bolts go plastic on me as the clicker torque wrench didn’t click I went over to the spring beam.

Spring beams are only £10 or so and will last a life time.
