4x4 mr2

Post by CRTwo »

I'd love a 4wheel drive mr2 and i'm sure toyota did make a working prototype, has anyone got any information on this subject?

i'm guessing they used a system similar to the gt4 although i know gt4 shafts are different, the picnic, previa, and various year celica's use the same splined shaft's, but if i just used a gt4 gearbox the transfer box would be sending the shaft to the back of the engine not the front, could the transfer box simply be changed for a suitable unit, i've not seen a gt gearbox so i'm not sure how the transfer box mounts to the gearbox, i'm not really sure where to go from here and it's just an idea at the moment, any help much appreciated.

thanks chris

The subject has been discussed in depth many times on Twobrutal, in fact i think someone is actually having a go at it.

For me, your best bet would be to mount an engine inline in the Mr2 engine bay, but use the normal transverse gearbox so one shaft would be heading forward and one back, then you want a front and rear diff.

Fuel tank would need relocating, front end tube framing, front shock tubes would have to be modified or use rear ones or something (driveshaft path is impeded to hub)

Just some of the hundreds of problems you would face, and i don't think it's worth the effort, plus the Mr2 world will hate you. :D

You want to build a MR2 Group S replica - saw one of the 2 (?) originals at Goodwood Festival of Speed 3 years ago, no-one had a clue what it was.

Approx 600hp, 4wd, matt black and pretty ugly - but very cool:

i'm presuming PW@woodsport is the infamous mr. wood's, i did think of this option probably would be easier to remount the engine but i was hoping i could find a t section transfer box then have a shortened shaft to it and from it for the rear and run an offset shaft to the front of the car, to a diff although i'm not sure how this would then affect my rear diff, presumeably badly! it would be nice to see how the gt4 sends the shaft down the car normally if anyones got any pics. I was hoping to use possibly a modified starlet front subframe or something simliar, fuel tank could be a problem i'll check twobrutal.
as i said it was just an idea and thanks for bringing up the geometry fouling the shaft for the front's i hadn't thought of that.
to mount the engine inline the firewall behind the driver would have to be cut then modified to fit the gearbox? like putting a trany tunnel in for a rear wheel drive conversion will this make it impossible to pass mot?

looked into the 222d abit more the engine is deffinatly still transverse mounted so if i could find replica bits it may be possible to marry them :-k

why prey tell would people hate a 4x4 mr2? Jealousy?

There's a select few who frown on anything new done to these cars and only the way Toyota intended will do... i've nearly been burnt at the stake a few times :D

lol then they'll have to burn me i want to do all sort's of 'different' approaches:

vvt-i onto a rev3 i think it's possbile but i'm hoping it' s a cam phasing type i think this may be easier to convert rather than playing with rocker's, or possibly just convert it to a cam phasing type anyway, i'd rather drop a head on though.

quad carb's i'd love that :D the noise!

the ambitious 4 wheel drive conversion

i'm a gonner

Look in my gallery section MR2 - RS200.
You have permission ( I run the site) to post some of my pics on this thread as required.
I looked at 4WD but if a transverse engine & box is set up to run "for aft", the F/drive diff ratio's would need to be addressed, there are many other issues too which is why my replica remains mid engined RWD at the present. KISS normally works best. I also considered front facing "for aft" onto an Audi A4 gear box transaxle. I might do this on my next car!

i did think of trying to take some audi encouragement onboard, like maybe put the gearbox up front but its more trouble with the mr2, although i can only imagine the benefits of having that gearbox over the front wheels on a 4wheel mr2 :D GRIP!

thanks all!
