A bit of searching on eBay for

"MR2 exhaust" or

"MR2 cat" and

"MR2 decat" will give you a good idea of what's available.

About the only thing worth paying attention to, IMO, is to get yourself a cat-back exhaust, a cat AND a decat pipe then bolt it all together with stainless steel bolts and lots of coppaslip then, come MOT time, you can bung the cat in to ensure you pass the emissions test and then whip it out again afterwards.

There are some fancy systems that do away with the cat entirely but, of course, if you fit one of those and then your car struggles with emissions there's no way to fit a cat back in.

There are 2 sensors in the exhaust system.

There's the oxygen sensor, which lives in the flexi downpipe

(or on the manifold in later cars) so a new exahust won't affect this.

The other sensor is a simple temperature sensor that will light up a warning light on the dash if your cat gets too hot.

The easiest way to deal with this is simply to unplug the wiring under the carpet in the boot, remove the sensor from the old cat, remove the sensor completely then wrap it in a bit of foam, reconnect the wiring and wedge it in a bit of dead space under the carpet in the cornet of the boot.

No decat pipe will have a connection for this sensor and about the only cat's that do are OEM ones from Toyota.

Assuming you're going to replace the cat with a decat pipe and then only fit the cat for the MOT you needn't worry about that sensor not doing it's job.

You DO need to leave that sensor wire connected though otherwise the warning light on the dash will come on.

That's why it's easiest just to leave the wiring connected and just bung the sensor under the carpet in the boot.

Also, FWIW, if you plan to just fit a cat for MOTs then it's really not worth spending a fortune on a cat cos it only has to work for a few minutes every year.
