2.2 Stroker kit

Hi guy just wanted to ask a quick question if I may.

I was specking with T.D.I to day, Who is a trusted and very good tunner. I asked him a few questions about a spec for my car, he advised me for my power goals I should get a stroker kit at it will help alot I.e shorter turbo lag ect.

I had a quick look on the internet and found a few kits but £3K is a heavy wack for a pistion, con rod and a crank.

So my question is, Could you build your own Kit buying the parts separately? I have done a quick search on the net Of what type of crank you could use a 5sFE crank Machine down to fit . I am no expert so I thought I would throw the question to you guys that are.

Hi Rich its typically cheaper to by parts seperately as you say, we have built a few with the 5s camry crank and it works well, my 2.2 was the first camry crank 2.2 in the uk around 5/6 years ago now its quite popular, dont forget to budget around £200 for turning the crank down though, rods and pistons will add around another £700. So you can get a stroker sorted for around a grand.

sorry, not trying to hijack. where can i find a camry block? would like to buy jus the bare block (no head or ancillaries).

I have been looking and I cant find any... tryed all my breakers yards near me and tryed to search via the in internet... looking 200-300 may be?

found an american site that could send me a crank if I wished but would like a block to put it in as they do have thicker walls than the rev2 block that is the thickest in the mr2 range?

I have 3 blocks and cranks here all late engines but need more and it costs lots of money to get them over from the USA.
If I can get more at the right price I will let you know.

just after the block and main caps, no crank needed. would pay 200 :)

I know the camry block has a standard bore of 87.1mm, and assuming the 3S and 5S blocks aren't that different I had assumed the remaining cylinder walls would actually be thiner...

Can anyone confirm?

going by the pics I've seem on the mr2oc.com yep the 5s block has thicker cylinder walls but it could have been any block lol. Guess someone should measure it

Interesting- cheers buddy :thumleft:

Might be worth looking at sleeving a 5s block down to 86mm- that way you're removing less material from the block to fit the sleeves, and end up with both a strong outer block and strong cylinder walls :-k

Thanks Bob- think I will seriously look into getting a 5s block imported then- seems a sensible way forwards :thumleft:

Next choice is then whether to short stroke it or run it as a 2.2l lol

There are plenty of 500-600bhp 3S-block strokers around, so for most, a 5S block isn't necessary.

Just get the bores sleeved.

I did have my previous block sleeved and it cracked between the cylinders (was a rev 3). In fairness I've not given my rebuild block any abuse...but I'm planning for the future, and if the 5s option is more bullet proof it is definately something I want to investigate. Everything I've seen suggests that the 3S blocks are the potential weak point and that you do take pot luck as to whether you get a good un or not!

If this one cracks I think the 5s sounds like the way forwards :thumleft:

A friend told me that strokers weren't able to rev too high. Is this true? What makes it dangerous to rev too high?
