Post by Tom-os »

I have something similar happen to mine.

Whenever i drive somewhere and stop, if the engine is still warm when i go to start her up again then she will stall unless i give it a few revs.

Friend told me it could be a breather pipe has a leak.

I'll have to see if i can find out if that is the problem. I've got it booked in for wednesday so not too long until i'll find out.
I'm going to do a coolant change today and make sure its bled properly because the water temp gauge seems to be playing up and i think it may have an air block so going to see if i can solve that problem as well.
Cheers for the advise, anything else you think it might be then please let me know :D

The ways in which a car can stall is usually down to the driver, especially on manual transmission. For instance if a driver takes their foot off the clutch too quickly while stationary then the car will stall; taking the foot off slowly will stop this happening. Stalling also happens when the driver forgets to depress the clutch and/or changing to neutral while coming to a stop.

Hi Craigo,
Thanks for the advise but i know how to work a clutch, lol.
It's only jusr recently happened and this morning whilst leaving it to warm up it stalled whilst sitting on my drive so has nothing to do with the clutch.
Any other ideas are more than welcome though?
Also does anyone know where i can get a set of Service hoses for bleeding the coolant system?

might be a weak fuel pump?... mine does a similar thing. once warm or if i have drove somewhere get out then come back and start her up again it will occasionally stall. (likes doing it while at a petrol station as i wait to move forward to a free pump)

spoke to Luke@pacific works a few times about this, thought it might have been my alternator playing up at first but he tested it and it was fine, no vac leaks all pipes are ok so next guess till i replace it and find out is it could be the original fuel pump is just getting old and weak.

try bridging the pins and running a diagnostic test, see if any codes flash up.

hope any of that info helps mate :)

Hi MR2_CL
Cheers for the advise.
The trouble is it that it doesn't stall once its warmed up totally like your saying. Once i've drove it for 15mins or more it's fine. I warm the engine up on the drive for at least 5minutes in the mornings before i even take it off the drive but as soon as i get to the first set of lights or a junction it stalls but like i said once i've drove it for 15minutes or more its fine, and even if i leave it for an hour then get back in it then its fine. It's just for that first 10minutes in the morning.
Any ideas now?
Also did you wanna explain this bridging business because not really clued up on that? :-k

in the engine bay think its top right, cant for the life of me remember  but there is a small black box, lift the flap type thing and connect terminals TE1 and E1 with a paper clip (engine turned off)... this will flash up a light on the dash. if there is a problem is will flash e.g. 5 blinks... pause... 2 blinks, that would indicate the knock sensor. if there isn't any sensor problems going to the ecu it will just flash continuously (indicating no faults)

here is a link:

scrol about half way down and it gives the codes :)

could be a cruddy fuel filter, weak fuel pump... how old are your plugs, leads, dizzy/rota arm?

could be any number of things lol, but do the simple ones first

Hi MR2_CL.
I did what tyou said and it came up with no error codes (continious flashing)
However, i then found some pipes so that i could bleed the coolant system correctly and on taking it out to run the engine hot i managed to hit a lamp post, so not happy right now at all.
But cheers for the help.
You might be able to help me with getting it back on the road though. Do you know if the front nearside wheel hub and steering arm and stuff are the same for all models of MK2's?

Check all the pipes from the air flow meter to the throttle body.

Air flow meter fits just on top or just downstream of the air filter... what you're looking for is a split pipe. It'll normally be the one that fits into the compressor side of the turbocharger as they become brittle with age....
