[Mk2] [NA] MK2 Power Steering

Post by wayneadam »

Hi.

I have just bought a MK2 G Limited 1991.

Strange fault really.

After 60 seconds stationery the power steering fails.
That is 60 seconds stationery regardless of whether you work the steering wheel or leave alone. either way it will fail at about 60 seconds.
Once the car is moving up to 2 or 3 mph the power steering returns.
Another way to get it working again is to simply turn off the ignition and restart.
I can hear the pump working and after around 60 second (stationery,) I then hear the pump wine down to a halt.

Also there is a continuous high pitch noise coming from the metal box of tricks that is mounted to the bulk head to the passenger side of the battery...marked Power Steering.

Do you have any idea where this fault might lie, how to go about diagnosing or sombody to contact with experiance of such a fault?

Many thanks.

Wayne.

Ps First time member and unsure if I have posted this in the correct place..advice also appreciated.

I reckon your steering wheel position sensor (black plastic box of tricks at the top of the steering column on the underside) is broken, disconnected, or you have an aftermarket steering wheel boss that it doesn't work with.

It's supposed to switch off after not having been used for a while, but a nudge of the steering wheel should bring it straight back on again.

Sounds very feasible as there is an after market steering wheel and boss fitted.
Where can I find this assembly?
Is it within the main stalk arm cowl immidiately behind the boss?
Do you know if there is a possibility of re-connecting the steering wheel position sensor to the after market boss?
Many many thanks for your response!!

Some people just shoehorn aftermarket bosses on and don't quite see the significance of the black box. It's right at the top of the steering column on the underside, so if you remove the steering column cowl you'll see it. It has a ring on the stock boss which passes through it. The ring may or may not be there anymore... best get it to bits and see, the cowl is only 5 screws, all on the underside.

Hi.
I have taken cowl off to reveal black plastic disc at the top of column with nothing attached.
beneath that there is a white elec block (20mm, 20mm,10mm,) dageling with five wires going in. (Red with black stripe, green, brown, white and a black.)
Nothing coming out.
Looking like the problem.
Guessing, as you say some one has previously shoe horned together and there should be a set up between the black disc and the five wires?
Many thanks.

Yeah that sounds about right

I believe they're the same part on all MK2s with PAS so just contact someone breaking a car and I'm sure they'll be happy to sort you out.

Steering Wheel

Post by wayneadam »

Have now got the steering switch gear.
next prob...
It has a three pin connector facing towards the driver.
What is this for?
Anyone had experience fitting/marrying after market wheel to power steering model?

Hi,
Thanks for that.
I have what the photo is showing so hopefully will be able to marry.
Coming forward from the black disc is a three pin connector which I now know to be the power for the air bag.
I guess the person that origonally fitted the after market wheel did away with this as obviously it doesn't have the air bag.
Unfortunately though this also acts as the movement senser for the power steering?
Is it connected to the back of the boss?
Can't see on photo guessing it is on the back side?

Ohh, *that* 3 pin connector. Yeah that's for the (optional) airbag and the horn. I think it's called the spiral cable.
