Yellow stuff pads with standard or grooved discs road/track???

Post by js1mr2 »

My front and rear discs and pads need replacing and since I’ve got trackdays planned and booked for the summer and enjoy fast road driving I was going to get EBC yellow stuff pads all round.

However, I wasn’t sure whether to go for EBC grooved discs all round or instead to get standard discs and save £100 which I could perhaps spend on braided brake lines? Obviously I don’t want to experience brake fade on track from the EBC standard discs but also don’t want the grooved ones to eat the pads too quickly.

Will yellow stuff pads work with standard discs or are they designed for grooved discs due to temperature and the fact the grooves will clear out the dust?

Cheers Jeremy

Yellow stuff pads with standard discs will work fine bud no need for drilled/grooved discs. Also replace the fluid with some good 5.1 like motul. Fresh fluid is very important.

I put a full set of new 40 grooved zinc plated discs, yellow stuff pads, full SS hoses and new 5.1.

Brakes are fantastic.

i put new yellow ebcs onto brand new Toyota disks all round about 4000 miles ago and front disks are now fooked
if you drive like miss daisy then you dont heat the pads up and you wont get much braking . but if you use the brakes hard standard disks will not last long
iv been advised to get the ebc disks by someone that races :thumleft:

Just to add the MR2 Championship use standard discs with Carbotech pads. Just make sure they are not cheap discs. I use blueprint discs myself and have never had a problem with hard track use.

ok, I've spent the last few weeks trying to decide on a disc/pad combo and have received nothing but conflicting opinion.. I guess brake choice is largely down to personal preference.

I know CRN discs are cheap but are they as good quality and long lasting as EBC or standard discs?

I bought the CRN ones. Well worth it mate. I got mine zinc plated so they don't look all rusty.

Still look good today

I've tried a few different combinations of discs/pads on my mr2 at trackdays and found the yellow stuff pads with grooved discs not to be up to the job.
I've only heard good things about carbotech except for squeeky when cold but have yet to try these as the latest setup i have has done the job. I fitted a bracket sold by a member on here to extend the caliper out to allow fitment of a larger disc. Now using this and a set of redstuff pads on a very hot day at the same circuit i tried the yellow stuff pads at, my brakes were completely transformed. Never lost an ounce of confidence in them no matter how many laps i put in. Think the discs are grooved supra items now. Can't reccommend this mod enough for the price.

You are 100% right.

I have had two sets and the fronts warp in no time and make the car undriveable.

I have standard discs and Blueprint pads, seem good enough for road use, but they definatly start to fade after some hard use relatively quickly, I wouldn't use them at a track day. I'll definatly use this set up for the road everytime though.

I used Porterfield pads on my Rev 1 with the smaller brakes. They lasted 2 years with lots of track days. Best brakes I have ever had.

I had a trackday at the weekend and I am using Yellowstuff pads and standard blueprint disks with Motul RBF 660 fluid and TRD braided lines. The pads themselves were reasonably good. I did suffer a lot of brake fade but it got to the point were it wasn't getting any worse so you just had to put up with a soft pedal but the brakes were still reasonably effective. One thing though, the disks did judder quite a bit under heavy braking.

I'm not Bob, but it depends which ones you want? The full on races ones are £103 + VAT.

Prices are all here.

Cost me a lot more than this but I had to get them over from the USA as they where not sold over here at that time.
