[Mk2] [Turbo] Gutless at higher RPM :(

Post by Jonnie1987 »

I recently bought a Rev 1 MR2 Turbo (import) its Just had a service which inclded.......

Engine Flush and oil change
Plugs
Leads
Dizzy cap + Rotor Arm

Its got a Gizzmo boost controller set to 0.8bar and an Apexi Induction kit. It has a standard exhaust with a hollowed out cat (I presume its decat as it sounds nice an raspy with turbo noise when reved)

When I put my foot down the acceleration is good to begin with and the turbo boosts up fine. However at around 5000rpm the power drops away and it feels gutless. The engine really struggles to climb up to higher rpm.

Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution?

It'll probably be the standard CT26 turbo.

Upgrade to a CT20b and it'll hold the boost to 7k rpm :thumleft:

hmmm the boost value on the boost controller doesn't seem to drop off. Would the CT20b be a direct replacement for the CT26 or would I have to change the manifold?

dont think its the CT26's Fault. My CT26's boost doesnt start dropping untill close to the redline!! Infact I dont even realy feel it dropping off.

Even if it was the CT26 dropping boost it wouldnt drop enough to cause the engine to struggle to climb / rev higher.

I think your problem is somewhere else. Try turning the EBC off first or even better bypass the EBC and just connect the turbo straight to the actuator.

Oh it does have a FCD (Fuel Cut Defender) fitted doesnt it???

You may well be getting knock, then the ecu will back off timing and the engine will go flat.

Try setting your base timing to 8deg

Im not 100% on stock ecu's, but does exessive knock not throw up a flash on the screen?

The CT26 doesn't actually drop boost as both my gauges showed 1bar to redline, its the fact that it's too small to hold the torque and power past 5k so it bogs down. CT20 solved that straight away but I would never go down the ceramic route again, get an uprated one if you're going to replace anyway to make it last :thumleft:

*Excessive* knock flags a CEL, it has to be enough to blow the knock sensor though :)

The knock sensor is working all the time controlling fuel and timing. If the boost it turned up to around 1 to 1.2 bar and the fuel is not 99ron and the static timing has not been set to 8 deg there will be lots of knock and the engine will go flat at high revs.

It could be knock I suppose. I dont have an FCD fitted at present but Im thinking about getting one.
I would have replied sooner but I havn't been getting any notification emails!

My moneys on the turbo mate, have a look round for a CT20b, you can get them cheap enough round the forums these days, and to swap them is easy enough.

Oh and I havent been getting notifications either :-k

Check your spam folders. We haven't changed anything in ages but sometimes the larger webmail providers (and I've noticed you're on hotmail and yahoo respectively) randomly classify our emails as spam when they aren't.
