my little project (so far) - (remapped 420.5bhp)

Post by Timsmr2 »

Hi All,

Been a member for a long time now (since before the forum) but never actually got round to posting in the member section. So thought I'd post some pics of the car as it was, is now and a bit of history of ownership.

I've had the car since 2003 it was at purchase completely standard rev1 turbo. After about 6 months I started making changes, exhaust, filter, MBC etc. and it looked like this (only pic I could find).

Image

Summer 2004 I had got bored of the performance and decided to drastically modify the car. I had studied Mechanical Engineering previously (although now work in computers) so I like getting my hands dirty from time to time. My first purchase for this project was a Fensport GT28BB, in 2004 this was pretty much as big a turbo as people put on mr2s.

In early 2005 I dropped the engine and began the rebuild. Mainly due to funds this took about 1 1/2 years to complete (for anyone attempting this themselves I highly recommend getting a copy of the Toyota Service Repair manual).

Image

As I didn't have a crane to reinstall the engine I had the car and engine transported to 3S for the engine installation and initial setup of PFC.

September 2006 the car was finally back on the road.

Brief spec

- Forged bottom end (Eagle rods/86.5 JE pistons),
- Head ported polished and matched to manifolds
- HKS 264 Cams and Valve springs, competiton cut valve seats.
- Fensport GT28BB Internal wastegate turbo
- Radtec CC
- Wolfkatz top feed fuel rail with 870cc injectors
- Apexi PFC Pro Spec
- Apexi AVC-R
- Ogura ORC409D clutch and flywheel kit
- TRD 1.4mm HG
- Apexi N1 Exhaust
- Walbro intank pump + Aeromotive FPR
- More Defi BF gauges than you can shake a stick at

In the last couple of years I have changed the intake to an RMR and had it remapped by both Lyndon and Ryan and it currently puts out about 310 whp. The limiting factor being that intake temps rise rapidly once you start approaching 2bar which was thought to be the turbo not being man enough but after recent discoveries it may be cooling related

The car has also had a set of HAs and has recently been treated to a set of poly bushes and TRD anti roll bars.

Recently (all in about a month) the car that has been faultless till now (it should be most of it is new) has had a few problems. Firstly I had someone reverse into me damaging the wing and drivers door.

Image

Then I found out my front HAs and drop links were completely foobed. Finally on changing the rocker cover gasket I discovered coolant in the intake which was traced back to the 9k mile old Radtec Charge cooler.

(if you look carefully you can see the blue coolant sloshing around in the bottom of the CC).

Image

Which brings me to the present I have taken the opportunity to fit the body kit bits that I have been collecting over the years. These comprise of rev3 rear lights and centre panel, toms side skirts, toms rear bumper and Aeroware front lip. Here is how the car looked saturday ready for its trip to be painted.

Its currently at 3S (TGT) awaiting one of their lovely new charge cooler systems, a replacement drivers door, both wings changed to UK spec and the painting of the body kit bits.

I also have a set of BC Racing BR coilovers on order that I will be fitting once I get the car back.

Future plans would probably be to get a bigger turbo (GT3071/76R) as I have pretty much everything else in place to get the car making some serious power.

NB - If anyone wants a detailed spec list then my garage is pretty much up to date.

Would love to see the dyno print out of it on the GT28! They sound like great turbos on MR2s.

Look forward to the pics after paint work. Amazing how cr@p they look with just a few body parts stuck on.

Any plans on a spoiler or wheels change?

Me too unfortunately last time I had it mapped by Ryan we hit the road afterwards to finalise the map and by the time we got back to the garage they had closed and gone home. I did call and they said they would send it but I never got it.

I will say that everyone thats been in the car remarks at how quickly the turbo spools. To me it feels like it spools much quicker than stock and continues to pull hard right up to the red line (and probably beyond).

No plans for changing the spoiler yet though I definitely want to ditch the halfords type ariel either filling it or maybe replacing it with a stock one.
To be honest there arent a lot of aftermarket spoilers that I like.

For the wheels I think i'll probably go back to 17s at some point as I would like to upgrade the brakes. At the moment the SA3Rs are starting to grow on me I would like to get a set in black with a polished lip.

(Like these on tarmac terrorist's car hopefully he wont mind me using this pic)

Picked the car up from TGT yesterday. Here are the first pics i have it was a bit misty this morning and i think the camera lense needs a bit of a clean so will get some better ones up soon. TGT have done a great job and the car looks really good now, a very business like track car look to it.

Unfortunately I managed to scrape the bottom of the front lip putting it away in the garage after only 2 hours of having the car back (got to be some sort of record) doh!

Yep been thinking this or possibly getting a newer version of the uk one. I'm possibly looking at some sort of scoop in the bonnet that would be used to channel air from a hole cut behind the radiator (bit like the border bonnets but more extreme) so was leaning towards a new uk one as it wont interfere with air flow as much (not that it will probably make much difference).
