Tyre choice

Post by John145 »

Hi guys,

Getting some 15" rims in the next couple of days, just wondering what you guys reckon to tyres? I'm thinking Toyo T1R's front and back, with 195/50/R15 front and 225/50/R15 rear. I know the T1R's are a good tyre in the wet and dry, just wondering what you lot run? Also will the slightly smaller radius on the front upset the handling?

Thanks!

not much choice on the 15s

i personally use R888s for a while (which are track tyres not road tyres) but now theyve worn out i've switched to T1Rs

the T1Rs aint the greatest tyre in the world, theyre budget performance tyres really, but none of the pukka tyres are available in such small sizes :(

im running 205/15/15 front and 225/50/15 rear on r888s! They are pretty cheap on 15s mate.

Front last 4 ages.....rears lasted about a year 4 me + 8 track days so not 2 bad really

Post by Macca MR2 »

go to camskill

falkens ziex bla bla bla. get 205/55/88v on the front and 225/50/91v on the back. excellent tires loads of grip great comfort and top quality.

p.s do not get t1r,s proxes crap toyo. they are way to soft and have terrible feel for the road and i do not rate them. :-k

I wouldn't touch Falken's with a bargepole, hideous tyres with no grip. Much prefer Bridgestone Potenzas for grip, feel etc.

Really? It's T1-Rs for me. 205/50/15 and 225/50/15 for more neutral (less understeer) handling than standard. Get the right pressures and they're good tyres though they do take 2/300 miles to scrub in.

I like T1R's, not going to go for Falken, don't like the tread pattern!

Can't afford R888's at the moment and I need this car for day to day driving!

205 on the front you reckon? Is going for 215/40 on the rear stupid?

i'd agree with the toyos being not brilliant. Grippy tyres but seem to be made from very soft rubber to get the grip levels so don't last very long. Which isn't what you want from expensive rubber

They aren't particularly expensive, only 40quid each for the front and 80 quid for the rear.

Falkens are the only tyres that let go on grip on my MR2. Never touching them again, no confidence in them. The Potenzas were immensely better

John, my advice would be to stick with a 225 rear (on the assumption you're on standard wheels and rev2 and on?). I can see no advantage in reducing rear rubber and you ideally want a 20 or 30mm stagger. The front can either be the normal (195/55/15 NOT a 195/50/15) or the 205/50. My preference is for the 205 as as I've said it reduces understeer though of course you may prefer a more forgiving set up. T1-Rs come in both 205/50 and 195/55 I believe.

Im picking a set of standard wheels up soon but im going to be experimenting with the tyres.

Im going to be using a 205/45/15 front and 225/45/15 rear. But eventually getting another set of rears for the front and then running the 225/45/15 all round. Hopefully Toyos

Mine had 225s all round when I first bought it and knew no better. They were off in 3mths but not before I'd spun it.

No point having so much front end grip unless its a show car. The front will drag the back out of balance, toyota stuck 195's on the front for a reason! My car has 17" 225/35 Avon's on all around, so if anyone wants some wheels for the shows give me a shout!

I have 195/50/15 Parada Spec 2's on the front, and 225/55/15 Nexen N2000's on the back , was expecting the Nexen's to be poo tbh, but theyre actually not at all bad if im honest with you, and dont last just 100miles

just to add, the R888s are NOT expensive, mine actually cost LESS than my T1Rs

if you consider how long theyll last then they get expensive, as you wont get anywhere near the mileage out of them as road tyres

Are track tyres sensible on a road car, what about when it rains? or are they not that bad?
