Good question - I don't think it has.
I've got a good 1ZZ engine/clutch/gearbox to sell if you wanna' try!

A 1zz would be very easy (in engine conversion terms) to transplant into a mk1 but why would you want to? It's worse than the 4a-ge, and an absolutely useless unit in terms of reliability.

If you are thinking about a modern engine then go 2zz-fe to mimic the 4a-ges characteristics, but for me the best engine in a Mk1 is a 1mz-fe without a doubt.

Sorry to resurect an old thread, I have been considering this as a conversion especially as AW11RALLY has proved that a Lotus Exige gearbox can be fitted and works. However I would like to know if anyone has any information about increasing the capacity of this engine. I understand that the basis of the conversion is the 1zzfe crank and flywheel.

Can anyone shed anymore light on this conversion?

Actually, we've just put together a turbocharged 2.0 litre 2ZZ-GE which is offering epic levels of performance! You can see the car competing in the MR2 Super GT series a week on Saturday, and I'm sure there'll be some video footage afterwards.

In the meantime, here's some footage of a stock 2ZZ that's been turbocharged:

Wow- 2l 2ZZGE with a turbo! How do you increase the capacity to 2l, stroke and over bore? Sounds very very interesting :-k =P~

A 2L 2ZZ-GE on ITB's and management would make a great track/rally weapon.

A bit expensive at the moment, the last 2ZZ and box I saw on e-bay was £2500. Then add the crank and rods to up the capacity to 1950ish and its getting very expensive, and thats before the ITBs, ECU, Quaife LSD and final drive kit.

Still it would be great, I hear the 2ZZ can make serious power on ITBs.

One for the future.

I have done some more research on this engine and it seems that the lotus exige owners have been doing this upgrade for some time. Various American tuning companies have developed stroker kits (eg Monkeywrench Racing) but do appear to be expensive. Interestingly with this level of developmet the C64 gearbox shows signs of weakness, and some Exiges are being converted to have MR2 turbo LSD boxes fitted

Yes, it looks like anything over 250-300bhp doesn't do the C64 much good.

I am sure it would be fine for road use upto and over 300bhp, Lotus use the C64 upto about 260bhp. However I doubt it would last long in a track or race car at those kind of outputs.

Looks like we may soon see a 2zzge converted MK1, seems that Woodsport will be offering this conversion and have a car booked in already (look on MK1 MR2 Club forum 'affiliates' for details).
