gold plating engine components

Post by 72163427 »

Hi guys

I've got a bit of spare time at the moment and thinking of gold plating some bits on a completely stock engine bay, so all the heatshields, ic pipes, cam cover and inlet manifold. Gold is a good heat reflector, doesnt corrode and is surprisingly easy to keep clean so it could work out well

cool? or chav? your thoughts please + pics of any mr2s that have had it done would be good too

cheers

that orange almera that they used in the autoglym adverts in banzai with the gold plated engine parts says it all for me really.

it all just screams 'im trying too hard' i know the mclaren f1 had gold plated heatshields or whatever, but i just dont find gold plate pleasing to the eye or impressive, it seems beyond pointless, dont get me wrong, i do like neatly detailed engines, but not keen on 'bling bays' each to their own though!

indeed the mclaren f1 used gold plating for purely functionality reasons, not too sure the mr2 would gain any of those benifits.....and as said im not too sure on what peoples reactions would be with the gold!

I must admit I am tempted to get some of the gold reflective film to a) cover my ARC Airbox and b) put on the underside of my ST205 chargecooler.

Though the whole blingbling factor makes me hesitate.

get it gold plated its not important what it looks like. its there to do a job and thats be a heat shield like it did in the mclaren f1

The mclaren had a carbon fibre body which can be weakened over time when exposed to the heat of the engine, hence the engine bay was lined with gold foil to reflect the heat away from the carbon panels.

The MR2 doesnt have a carbon monocoque (unfortunately) therefore the gold linings "job" would be pretty minimal, apart from looking good...

meh. EVEN THOUGH i have big gold shiney wheels :P im not a fan of it normally - might be a bit OTT in the engine bay (just like the pics IMO), but each to thier own :thumleft: after all, thats what modding is all about!

Alternatively why not take a look at some of pacific works cars for ideas - for example ''Moo'' looks like he sent his car to them and now it looks CRAZYAWESOME (yes thats a word) =P~

theres a bit of a diference between the carbon fibre that people can fit to an mr2 and the amount used in a mclaren f1! lol

yeah ofcourse there is difference in how much carbon is used between mclaren and mr2 . thats not the point here for example mr2 engine lid u can get in carbon and the vents and the scoop which is all round the hot engine so i think it will be good to still get it gold lined
