2 Radiators?!?!?

Post by Leehoochie01 »

Hi All,

I was looking over my s/c today and decided to check the Radiator (was bored!!) and apart from the large amount of leaves I found.....I discovered a 2nd radiator?!?!? The main one I expected, black and attached to the coolant hoses but there is a silver one (possible ali) in-front of it, similar size but thinner......Can any one tell me what this is for? (and apologies if this is the dumbest question ever lol)

Also, I did notice quite a bit of rust/rot on the front cross member that the main radiator is sat on, does anyone know the part number for this? and has anyone fitted one before?

Cheers

The 2nd rad is probably air con, if not it could be a charge cooler rad.

The smaller rad will be your air con rad as Tim says.. You can get the front cross member from Toyota for a little over £100 + VAT.

PS, welcome to IMOC and please get some photos up of your SC! :thumleft:

Yep, that seems to be the offending member!! have you got the part number for it? also, how difficult is it to fit? i.e. bolt on or Weld?

Thanks for the warm welcome, I will get some photos up once I get a chance to give it a polish

but just a brief overview; its an 88 S/C T-bar Red with early mk3 alloys. This year I want to get it upto scratch, so I will be posting a few questions on this forum as I may need some help  (might start in a minute)

cheers guys

nearly forgot my original question; It has got A/C so that's why I never seen one before as my previous N/A didn't have A/C and I had that car in pieces hence the confusion!!

It's bolt on..

Try here.. if not do a search on the word bumper specific to the Mk1 section..

If you click on the image that Tim posted above it will open up larger - you can read the part number on the sticker on the larger version:

57104-17021 (I have confirmed this on an S/C parts catalogue)

Its spot welded onto the chassis, with all the bits bolting onto this, really is easy to change.

drill out the spot welds then weld it on and bolt everything up.

Oh and its less than £40!!! IIRC

I replaced mine recently as part of a total restoration. I can confirm the part No is T57104-17021 and it is welded on, cost £29.65 inc vat. In my opinion it is not that easy to change as a single job as you have to remove the whole front end and rad to get access for a drill, you also have to be very carefull that the new one is welded on in exactly the same position. Get a spot weld removal drill as it makes removing the old spot welds easy. Here is mine after fitting.

Note that if this cross member is rotten then there may be some problems with the two chassis box sections either side. Both mine required welding just behind where the cross menber mounts.

This photo shows it before all the bits were put back, note seam sealer at joints, before it was painted over.

Good Luck
