Rev 4 engine options (manufactured)

Post by Racer7 »

Hello,

I have found a azure blue Rev 4 on Pistonheads. Without trying to be rude to the seller I thought I'd just confirm what I think is incorrect information.

He tells me that the engine is a 197BHP VVTI one. Now there were no engine bay pics on the ad so I enquired further hoping that he had a Beams engine in there (as those engine performance details match up). I understand Beams were only put in on the last 1000 Rev5s so I hoped/assumed this was an engine transplant.

The guy has sent me an engine bay pic wich looks to my eyes like the normal N/A engine. No markings on there to suggest otherwise.

This is not it but gives you an idea:

So is this guy having me on/has been duped himself?

How many engine types were there for UK MR2? I'm pretty confident that I'm right but just thought I'd put it out to you experts.

His said he was going to speak to Toyota to confirm the engine type. He apparently has done this and is still saying its 197BHP VVTI.

You can spot the VVTi (BEAMS) engine a mile off, it's bright red for starters!

Looks like this:

And as Rash points out, JDM Rev5 only.

Thats what I was hoping to see! And the main reason I kept pushing for an engine bay pic.

So, factory build in Rev5s only right. But people do normal conversions right? I expect them to look exactly the same though (i.e. red top)

I think the guy is either trying fool me or has been fooled (he mentions the car has TRD sticker on it #-o )

Either way it's staying in his drive...

As a side - are there any issues that need to be checked on MR2s with transplanted Beams engines?

Thanks guys - I'm glad for the confirmation (i think it's just cos the guys was so adamant on the phone that he was right he made me doubt what I knew!)

AFAIK BEAMS powered MR2s were only produced in VERY low numbers so the engines are few and far between (they went into some Celicas in Japan as well so there are more engines than that). I reckon the only time you'd get an engine up for a conversion was if the motor had been written off or if someone had transplanted a turbo motor into their BEAMS shell... by that thinking I don't suppose you are very likely to find a BEAMS conversion!
