New Member Introduction (bought Tubby now - pictures inside!!!)

Hi all,

Will be looking to purchase a rev3 tubby in Feb so thought it appropriate to sign up! I peruse PH most days and have been told this is a good place to be

I'll admit, I am after a little advice (hey you've gotta start somewhere) as I want to be sure that I can look after the 2 (monetary / logistically etc) before taking the plunge. I know some basics but have specific questions that some may be able to help with

Is it best to ask here or start a specific topic about specific issues?

Also is there a base of people in the SW London / Surrey area as would be good to meet up etc

Welcome bud..i have been a member for a month now & every 1 on here have been a great help with any query i have had..this is the place to be if you have a MR2.
As for the questions you have about a tubby all you need to do is go to the home page by clicking on the IMOCuk at the top left hand corner,there is a section not far down the page MR2 Boards,enter MR2 Mk2 & leave a post or you can look at the Knowledge Base section (top right hand side) where you can leave posts about any questions you have about tubby..hope this helps

Hi and welcome

I'd suggest having a read through the MK2 forum - there are answers to most of the common questions in there, as well as links to buyers guides etc. If in doubt hit the search button in the top right, but when you put your search phrase in make sure you select 'Search for all terms' otherwise the results won't make much sense.

The MK2 turbo is an expensive car to run considering how much they cost to purchase, but you can save a load just by getting your hands dirty occasionally and figuring things out with the help of the bods on here.

Yesterday I bought the tubby

Excellent drive home, despite a detour as the M1 was closed due to a crash

300miles in total, car faultless!! Temp gauge stayed in the middle despite 1hr stop start tailback due to the above and boosted well in gears 1 - 4 throughout the rev range... and most of fifth

The only 2 minor points I am going to get sorted are:

1 the aerial does not go up (its stuck in the down position), there is no electrical wirring sound when the headunit (standard Mr T) is switched on, however it picks up radio stations OKish. Im guessing it is connected up, just the motor or wiring to the motor is duff.

2. The passenger side mirror folds (electrically) fine, but won't open (need to do it manually).. like its catching on something (dirvers side is fine closing and opening).

Apart from that its perfect!!

Good news Welcome to spending all of your wages on fuel!

The aerial fault is quite common unfortunately, they get gunged up over the years and eventually jam and then the motor burns out. If you can fix it then great - if not then there is a maplin aftermarket one which can be made to fit, you can get a new 'tail' from Toyota if the motor still works, or you can get a 2nd hand one from a breaker. If you go down the 2nd hand route remember rev1-2 and rev3-5 aerials are different.

The mirror might be wiring failure - the retractor mechanism is 4 wires, 2 for close and 2 for open.

There is power going to it.. you can here the motor trying to move the mirror (same noise as when it successfully retracts it in), so it has to be connected up, its just as if it is stuck?!

Oh and the only other thing is that the windscreen wipers seem to only smear water not actually clear it off the screen, but I think it just needs nwe wiper blades?

Hello mate welcome, some great stuff in the knowledge base.

What I did is bought a new aerial for a fiver, tapped into the existing 12v feed going to the radio antenna and if you pull the boot carpet back, there is a recess where the boot lock mechanism is, I stuck it in there.
