'94 figures....

GT Hardtop - 2,958,000 Yen
GT T-Bar - 3,098,000

GTS Hardtop - 2,716,000
GTS T-Bar - 2,856,000

G-Ltd Manual - 2,363,000
G-Ltd Auto - 2,456,000

G-Ltd Manual T-Bar - 2,503,000
G-Ltd Auto T-Bar - 2,596,000

G Manual - 2,138,000
G Auto - 2,231,000

G T-Bar Manual - 2,278,000
G T-Bar Auto - 2,371,000

So the GTS T-Bar works out at £14,820 according to the exchange rate today (1 GBP = 192.702 JPY).

Obviously those are prices in Japan, had it been sold here things would have been different - for example the '95 NA GT T-Bar was £20,760, by the time it got to '97 they were £23,225.

the hard facts are the yen youve got down.
i supose everything else (including the exchange rate) can be judged as a rough guess.

just like my guess of 28-30k! :-)

Normally at this point I'd pull out a trend graph of the Yen vs the Pound but I really can't be bothered :)

Well if you take the price in yen of the GT T bar in uk and relate it to the GT t bar in yen, you are talking 6k more in uk for similar spec car in 94/95. Then you need to calculate the difference in yen for the GTS turbo and the G ltd, then add the uk premium of 6k. Perhaps this would give you a rough guide of nearly 30k :?

This may surprise you:

(quotes back in 1989/1990, regarding the rev1)
"In Japan, the new MR2 is a bargain, ranging from the quivalent of £8100 to £12,400 for the new 228bhp turbocharged version."

Another source:
"Priced at between 1,820,000 yen (£8100) and 2,778,000 yen (£12,350)"

And to think the NA was launched in the UK at these prices:
Coupe (3S-FE) = £14,000,
GT (3S-GE) = £15,441,
GT T-Bar (3S-GE) = £16,650.

Sickening, and the JDM got ALOT more goodies :(

don't forget inflation halves the value of money each decade (well, approximately)

So a £15,000 product ten years ago would cost around £30,000 to buy today.

OK this isn't quite true for cars, as the relative price of cars today has dropped massively since the early 90s due to things like the EU relaxing trade restrictions.

But in 1991 the UK car market was a completely different place. I bet JDM imports were virtually unheard of, and were a damn site harder to get hold of than today.

Why not compare the price of a 1994 JDM MR2 tubbie (£14,820) with say the list price of a 1994 Escort RS. This would give a good comparison of the MR2's relative cost in 1994.

Car's prices is all supply & demand - which is why a 4 year old mondeo is peanuts, and a 10 year old tubbie is still £6k.

What Michael wrote is totally correct re: prices for the Japanese MR2's when new.

However there was / is a 5% Consumer Tax payable applicable to goods in Japan - so this should be added to the price of the cars Michael correctly listed.

As one or two of you also pointed out the economy has changed significantly since and therefore the exchange rate and what the Yen was worth those number of years ago again has significantly changed in line with cost of living and inflation and economical and fiscal progress.

The reason why the Turbo (according to Toyota) was never an official UK import is because Toyota did not feel that the UK public would be prepared to pay £30K approx for such a car. Also the Lotus Elan had just come on to the market in the UK at the time and would have been the MR2 Turbos main rival.

When we sell cars to Europe it is frequently requested by our European customers that we / Toyota provide proof of the "brand new sale price" of a car based on the price it was when new and in the year it was manufactured - so that the European Customs Agencies can apply a level of import tax to the vehicle.

Well done Michael on obtaining the figures so quickly.

One other quick point is that Toyota in Japan and Toyota GB operate their "new sales" very differently. Over here Aircon was considered a luxury option - in Japan Toyota would bend over backwards to accomodate any upgrades for your MR2 that you may have wished for and then deliver you the finished car!
