[Mk2] [Generic] Steering vibration at motorway speeds

Post by Race Idiot »

I'm getting allot of vibration through my steeringwheel at motorway speeds. I had my car checked at WIM who did a good job of ballancing the wheels which seems to have got rid of the majority of the vibration. However there is still some present, but it feels more like I can feel every bump through the wheel sort of more than unballanced wheels again.

Things that have been replaced on my car in the last two years are

Shocks
Springs
Balljoints
Steering rack gaitor
Outer steering rods
Rear topmounts
Front wheel bearings
Front discs and pads all round
Bushings replaced with polybushes

Now the only things left realy are the inner steering rods, the front topmopunts which apparently have a small amount of play and one of the strut cups is slightly deformed.

Can anyone else think of what might be causing this issue? Or does anyone have any TRD front topmounts going or where to get some for a rev3 car?

Also has anyone had problems fitting tein pillowball camberplates to normal front struts/billies?

Cheers!

Two things I would suggest, 1) Tracking needs doing? 2) Sticky caliper perhaps 3) Wheels need balancing, perhaps?

Wheels have been balanced at WIM as per my first post, car has been checked out at WIM and has a decent allignment also front calipers have been replaced with refurbed units in the last two years.

Also I have checked to see if any of the brakes are unusualy hot due to a sticking caliper as i've had that before too.

Is it juddering or is it a sensation of 'lightness' at the front end? If the latter you may want to consider fitting some Rev 5 wind deflectors. This may eliminate your problem. Mine had this at 70+ but now it's rock steady at even higher speeds.

Its more that you can feel every bump in the road through the steering wheel at higher speeds. This wasnt a problem a couple of months ago. Also it feels like the car is being pulled about by cambers a bit .

Argh, just noticed my brake pedal has started to judder a bit under high speed braking. Cant be warped brake discs causing the vibration could it?

I only had the discs and pads replaced a few months ago. #-o

I'd guess at the top mounts. TRDs can/could be had from Fensport as long as they're rev2 onwards. I've replaced all the stuff you have... topmounts, struts and springs. Balljoints, bushes and also steering rack and track rod ends. I've now no vibrations (went after the bushes and ball joints were fitted but were also vastly reduced after the topmounts were changed... one had practically exploded) but I do have a certain lightness over 85 ish which I'll be going back to WIM to help eradicate (perhaps a little more camber at the front?).
I reckon the vibration and the rest (tramlining, behaviour on camber etc) are different things. Tell WIM about the new behaviour and they'll be able to suggest adjustments to the set up to help... a visit to WIM can be fine tuned afterwards based on feedback. Vibrations though I'd guess are something else and since you've done everything else my money would be on topmounts.

eBay specials? I warped some cheap discs in a few months once.

Standard discs from rogue, with carbotec pads i'd hope they would be of decent quality. :? I dont realy lay on the brakes that much apart from the occasional quick grind to a halt in motorway traffic realy. Its annoying because the pads are bloody awesome.

After a bit of querying on the us oc someone popped up with this issue in this video.

The guys description of how his car drives sounds exactly like mine, vibration at speed and the steering pulling at cambers. Also one of my mot advisorys was that boot he has taken off was ripped on my car. I did have it replaced but surely that would cause the inner steering rods to go funny?

hi,
your description sounds identical to how my car was behaving , inner steering rod on drivers side was shot .
easy enough to change , i followed a post on here somewhere that told you exactly how to do it .
