Thread revival!

Just found a pic of the soft top BMW with canoe fitted any idea how they did it. And could you do the same to a Mk1?

I looked down the towbar route but found by the time you bought towbar and tralier it would be cheaper just to buy another car!

I think they did it with photoshop! It's *only* attached at the rear of the car, you'd get so much flex at speed and it wouldn't be able to take the weight!

it appears to me to be attached at the rear to a towbar and at the front to the windscreen surround (probably using the hood mounting points) anything is possible some things though are just not practicle

You actually could do that with a MKI (but for real :) ). I had forgotten about those types of rear tow bar supports. It's been a long time since I've seen one.
By using a set of Thule rooftop racks, with the proper attachments for the canoe, and then adding a rear tow bar, and tow bar to canoe support bar, as seen in the picture, you would have a much more stabile canoe than if you simply tried using roof racks, or other similar device, by themselves. It would take care of most of the concern that I would have, as long as all of the devices could be attached securely.
Remember, that racks like the Thules can be used on both hardtop and t-top MKI's. I have used the same ones on both, and only had to mount the racks slightly closer to each other on the t-top, due to the difference of where the t-top panels meet the rear quarter window.
The only downside is that you do have to leave the t-tops in place during what is usually beautiful weather. :(

Do you think the T-Bars would be strong enough with a kayak attached to them or would they shatter as surgested in the thread?

What did you carry on the roof of the T-Bar Mk1?

I can't say I would have considered the t-tops shattering a possibility, but if the load was heavy enough, and enough front to rear torsional stress was placed on them, then I suppose it could possibly be an issue. However, the part of the t-top that the racks are connected to are rather sturdy, and of course a well designed and properly used rear tow bar support rod should eliminiate the majority of stress on them.
I also would want to consider the weight of the canoe, etc. If it was not exceptionally heavy, and a good rear support bar was used, I would think it quite viable to carry a conoe. But you will have to determine what you think is a safe amount to carry.
I have only used my Thules for carrying skiis, so not much of a weight load, but I never heard or felt any significant torsional noise from carrying a coulpe sets of skis and driving at high freeway speeds either (80+ mph at times). I have also considered installing a luggage carry-all on the Thules, and would not have worried excessively about having it up there full of luggage being buffeted by strong winds, but I never have done it yet, mainly because I don't want to give up use of the t-tops for a really long period in good weather. :)
So, I'm afraid there is no real easy answer for you. You will just have to decide what you think is a safe weight to carry on them. Remember, the main danger would probably just be if you did not have the canoe stabilized from front to rear. That is where longitudinal torsion would come into play and possibly cause an issue. If a good rear support bar is used , and is quite solid then you will have eiminated most of your worry.
