[Mk2] [NA] rev 3 lights on rev 2 n/a center panel trouble

Post by bobothemonkey »

rev 3 center panel -
I recently got set of rev 3 rear lights complete with center panel, however there is no way i can get the panel to fit :( the reverse light and fog light holders are big and clumpy and push it out from the boot, has anyone else had that problem ?

I am fitting them onto a 1992 rev2 n/a

Any ideas how to get them to fit? short of removing reverse light from the car.... and fabricating up new brackets to hold it in place.

Any help would be appreciated :(
I dont want to buy one of those cheap and nasty smoothed panels from ebay as i like the standard rev 3 panel

you need to bash the metal behind where the panel sits for it to fit..........

Use a rubber mallet or hide type hammer ,that way you wont damge the paint and no need to touch it up so it doesnt rust

I was quite suprised to find that I didn't have to do this on my rev2. Would appear that the later ones are on a Rev3 chassis of sorts.

I would imagine that after a certain chassis number they were all on rev3 chassis'. Would think that as they were going into production the presses would have been changed prior to the release of the rev3.

Registration date doesn't mean manufactured date.

the lights fit securely, however hammered enough room for the reverse lights, however, the bolts on the rev 3 pannel do not line up at all, and there is no way of attaching it :( think will have to make up L shaped brackets or something to hold it into place, can see it turning out to be a nightmare aaaaaah :(

The L shaped brackets are around 7 pound each from toyota, i bought some a few months back, Attach too the centre pnel then the lights screw into it too.

if you dont have a rev 3 bootlock your key wont be able to go in far enough to open your boot ! make sure the release boot cable, the one situated in the car is well greased :thumleft: oh  dont forget the quad tail light conversion as well :thumleft: thats a must with rev 3 rear lights

I know this is an old topic but i need to bring it back to life!

Im putting a set of rev1 lights on my mr2 as i have a soft spot for them, ive got rev3(round ones) lights on at the mo.

Just wondered if there was any brackets i may need?

Ive got the center pannel for the lights so that no prob, and i wont need to do any bashing lol

Will the original bulb holders fit the lights too? Mines a 94.

If someone could let me know asap that would be great!

Thanks! Mart
