Got myself another MR2

Post by south_wales_MR2 »

Hi guys,

Havent been on here for a while. Sold my Red REV1 FE engined MR2 and got a Starlet GT turbo...and have now gone back to an MR2. This time its a REV3 1996 in Red with the 170odd bhp GE engine. So much better than my last one!!!

Cost me £2000 with full service history, Hpi clear, UK car with 75,000miles on the clock...BARGAIN.

Heres a few pics, apologies for quality but was way too excited to care about quality at the time.

Let me know what you guys think!

Its had an induction kit fitted, lazy eye kit, window tints in the rear and an extra strut brace in the back. Standard otherwise.

I wanted to get an induction kit anyway, but may just get a subtle blueflame exhaust to complement it. And finances permitting maybe some coilovers.

My main plans are sound system. The last few cars ive had, ive had to put up with a poo CD player and standard speakers, but for this car im thinking a nice custom install.

Erm, tips wise theres the usual points to mention -

Make sure its got good service history / Timing belt done at proper intervals, MOT/TAX...

Check for bodywork repairs. scratches, mismatching bodywork, dents etc...

Check all electrics work i.e. Pop-up headlights, central locking... Make sure T-bar glass bags are present and seals all in good nick if its not a tin-top.

Sometimes UK models can have Import bumpers fitted and visa versa so check its not/is an import before buying.

Other points to mention:-

Rust on bottom of doors, around windscreen and around battery tray.

Check coolant pipes and fuel pipes as these can perish/corrode and are murder to change.

Check if alternator has been changed as these can last just two years and are 200quid Plus due to water run-off point on engine lid right on top of alternator.

Suspension can seize and rust over time so check its in good working order.

Gearbox crunch is quite common, especially when changing down from 3rd to 2nd gear.

Brake calipers can stick when old so check brakes when test driving aswell as clutch slip.

Check chassis numbers match the advertised Revision as body parts etc can be fitted to make the car look like a different revision.

Other than that theres not much that goes wrong on these cars! Typical Japanese over-engineering!
