They're games that have sold over a certain amount and are a certain age.
Don't know either the sales or age though.
There are exceptions, CoD4 has never been release on Platinum- due to the fact that it's *still* selling after 2 years

I said this to Stevie(skydive) yesterday.
I find it a little random how some games price drops off noticably in no time where as others stick.
For example COD4 will still sell for top dollar, even 2nd hand, where as Killzone can now be had for less than£15 if you shop around.
And it's not just the PS3 platinum games either, I'm seeing quite a few games that were£40+ when released going for under £20 at the moment,

I picked up GRID for £15 delivered a couple of months back. I love platinum games! 
I dont tend to play more than a couple of games in one go on a regular basis and as such i miss the big releases. (also i will never pay full whack for a game) and pick up things on ebay used or some from the platinum collection.

I got it with the ps3 deal i got and have really enjoyed it.
Its got some very frantic online gaming too with up to 60 player in a single deathmatch! lol
