Cant remember exactly what worked and what didn't on mine when this happened (I know no dash lights lit up) but have you checked all the earths ?

I may be completely wrong  I'm not sure if a dodgey earth cable will still give power to wipers and horn etc..

Where your positive lead attaches to your battery there should be a main wire going off into your loom, but also a fuse link running parallel (single strand thick wire). When I had these symptoms, it was this link that had blown.
Otherwise the problem is likely your ign switch.

The Fusable Link is in the main +tive battery lead. If it blows, then you'll have nothing electrical anywhere on the car.

Subsidary +tive cables comming off the battery are generally aftermarket - mainly for the stereo if it's also fused.

If the headlights are turning on and the battery voltage gauge is working, then it sounds like an immobaliser/alarm issue.
