[Mk2] [NA] Alternator belt query – Urgent!

Post by The TVIS Kid »

I got a call of my sister yesterday morning while she was driving her mr2. She said she could smell burning rubber and that all the lights on the dash have come on including the engine light, battery, oil pressure (she had only driven the car around 100mtrs). I told her to leave the car where it was and I would have a look later. Anyway, the alternator belt has come off (the smell of burning rubber I guess). I think I should be able to get a new one and fit it but was wondering if the belt drives any other pumps. Namely the oil or water pump . I need to move the car about 2 miles to work on but if the pumps aren’t working I might be better off getting it towed.

Can anyone tell me if there are any problems with driving without this belt bar the obvious of the battery not being charged.

No probs with driving without alt. belt, just the battery will go flat quickly, as you already say. :thumleft:

Yep seperate belt and you can get it from any old motor factors. If your sisters car has aircon you'll need to release the aircon pulley and get that belt off first as the alternator belt is behind it ](*,)

Cheers guys. What sort of drain does the battery take after starting/while running. I don't think the battery on the car is the best and am worried about it cutting out. I only have a 15min drive though so hopefully it will be ok. I will try and do it in the day so no need for lights etc.

Can you plug an external battery charger into it beforehand? I've done a good 15-20 minutes in my turbo just on battery power (although by the end of that I had no indicators and my dash was lit up like a christmas tree!!) so as long as you have got sensible charge in the battery and disable all your anciliaries like stereo, etc you should be ok... fingers crossed!

Alternator belts which 'burn off' are normally due to a worn/sticking alternator pulley wheels. This is due to worn bearings - a common problem.

Just putting a new belt on will probably be a waste of time as you probably need a re-con alternator as well.
Best place to get one is

Give it a spin whilst underneath the car. Unless it spins freely without any drag you'll need to get it swapped.

I wish i had read this a day or so ago. We fitted the new belt but the battery would not seem to hold the charge. It was a very old battery so fitted a new one. 1 day later it cut out again. RAC were called to say that the alternator is only sending 11 volts back to the battery. I'm off to get some work done at Pacific works tomorrow so will see if they have a 2nd hand one for sale.
