Hand break problem

Post by ChefAngus »

I have all new hand break cables fitted. My problem is that when the
break is applied only one side (off side) works. It seems that the
other side has more resistance!

The arm on the break itself appears fine. I have manually pulled it on by hand.
Is this a common problem with the mr2?
What can I do to sort this?

Many thanks for looking.

are you 100% sure you have the right cables fitted the right way round?
different lenghts for left/right and also different for rev1/rev2+

Jay is correct.

You might find coloured bands on your cables close to the rear ends. Take a look and post up here what you find.

Are they really different lengths?

I know they're 'sided', but I thought that was just due to the brackets that come with them.

Assuming you've fitted the correct parts.....

The solution is to fully back off the adjuster so that both cables are slack. Then operate the footbrake to bed the pistons in. Then take up the slack. This should solve your problem. Also make sure the handbrake lever on the caliper operate across its full range and rests on the notched 'stop' when the cable is slack. Some WD40 will assist.

Have sorted it now...

Thanks for your help gents. The problem was that the new cable was stuck in the sheath.
I took it off and greased it up, seems fine now...but shouldn't have been like that, especialy as they are fifty quid each!
Never mind, sorted now, but Thanx again for all your help!

Yup rev1s are a different length but only by a few mill.
Red & yellow tags on the rev1s and green & blue on the later revs. It doesn't matter which you use for any rev so long as they're a matched pair.
Glad you got it sorted mate.
