Steve's Rev3 black tubby - *BIG UPDATE*

Post by sjm1984 »

Here is my Project of owing my MR2 since October 2008
Wheels:
15" ENKEI Lightweight Alloys
ICE:
Alpine Sat Nav & DVD player from Jap land…………….none of it was in English
After washing it and polishing it this is how it came out. Pictures don’t do any justice but in person it looks wicked. Wet look/mirror finish.

Image
Image
Image
Image
I then purchased a set of strut braces from Dave (oddshoe) Front Cusco brace and a rear Motoria Upper Brace.
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
I got rid of the HKS turbo exhaust as it was blowing and not best free flowing. So I went on the hunt for a Berk Technology exhaust 3 inch twin exit and with luck I picked a good deal with Peanut and sold me his
Image
I got my gear gaiter retrimmed by Rhon over at the MR2OC forum
Image

And I got in touch with Ben over at Carben Fibre creations for the CF heater panel and cluster surround
Image
Image
Then I replaced my front side light lenses with a slick pair of black crystal ones with led's
Image
And some general car porn material

First Rolling Road Session at Torque of the Devil in February 09
I was kind of shitting it TBH as it was the first time it was on the rollers, and was only expecting 230bhp
The sound of the engine sounded sweet and never missed a beat.
here was the final reading
252 bhp & 238 torque @14 psi........running on V power
Image
Image
Wanted to start on making the engine bay look more to life and presentable. So I started to think about what color to use and should I mix and match them. Conclusion came and I went with Candy apple red.
So I went on and started to prepare the engine cross brace and rear "Motoria" strut brace. I also had an Apexi Power intake induction kit that I got. I went and started to fit the induction kit and I didn’t take many pics of this but the following pic will show the work I have done so far with the paint.

I also wanted to do something with the engine rain tray cover. Rough draft and it will look better than the pic
Image
Started to prep
Image
Then I masked off where the out lining was going to be
Image
Image
This is still in progress as it has proved to be a little time consuming and I want the finish to be perfect.
I also started on the engine stay bar
Image
Image
Image
Image
I allowed the paint dried and hardened for a few days and it took me a good part of an hour to tape of the remaining area to be colored.
And here is the final product. I am very happy with it.
Image

Image
Image
I have now fitted a HKS SSQV dump valve/BOV (many thanks to www.funkypower.com) fitting wasn't bad only a 35 min job. The build quality is top notch and sounds really nice to.
Stock valve

HKS SSQV
Image

Image
Then came time to finally fit my new decat pipe with big flexi
This was not an easy task. 6 hours in total.
old cat down pipe, this weighed a massive 11.3 kg
Image
Image
Image
And the new one which weighed something like a bag of sugar. The build quality is brilliant
Image
Image
Image
I then upgraded my speakers for a nice set of Infinity Kappa 65.7cs 6.5" components
http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/popup_ ... rt_order=1
No pics of them installed but here is what a 14 year old speaker looks like after some D&B tunage
Image
Image
Rolling road result from Surrey Rolling Road
Image
Image
The power it produced
Image
I have just started on the exterior of the car and thought long and hard on what front bumper to go for. I opted for the Rouge motorsport Revision 6 bumper as it looks aggressive and doesn’t look like the typical "jap style body kit"
And I ordered up a 12 x 3 number plate from myshowplates.com for £11
Image
Image
Image
I then spotted a set of Super Advan Racing wheels over in the for sale section and picked these up with brand new Fulken 452 tyres. These have been in the Jap mags in the last 2 months in random pics
215/40/17 - Front 8j
245/40/17 Rear 9j
Image
Image
Image
I'm still thinking on what color I’ll be refurbing the wheels in.
Performance wise I have upgraded the intercooler to a new side mount 4 inch core. I have felt gains in performance with this and only when I have it tested on the rollers again I can show the gains.
Image
Image
Image
I moved onto sorting out my gear linkage problem after the last RWYB day I had out. So I went to GTS Chris and ordered a set of brass linkage bushes. It has defo made gear changed Sharpe yet smoother.
Fitted these within minutes with the up the ramp
I then changed the vacuum lines from the old OEM ones to brand new WHITE lines that I purchased from viper performance.

Some before and after pictures.
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
I added the wording "turbo" to compliment the tray.
Image
Image
Image
Currently on order I have a CERAMETALLIC PADDLE CLUTCH KIT from CG motor sport to be delivered and then I will be getting pacific works to fit it for me.
Then I shall book a mapping session with Ryan @ 2 bar to install and map my power FC.
Thanks for looking and I hope your heads are not sore from looking LOL

I have noticed the car was a little bit heavier when driving.

the advans are 17's with 8J on the front and 9 or 9.5 j on the back

Grips really good with the fulken 452s i have noticed a slight understeer when i throw it into a corner hard

with th 15's they are only 6.5j all round but they are good for kicking the back end out

Wow a 50bhp increase with just an induction kit and downpipe.

I guess I know what my next mod is going to be ;)

Great work mate, liking your style!

i've been looking the thread and noticed i never mentioned about my apex'i Avc-R set to 1.2 bar

So from a Induction Kit and DP you wont get a 50 hp increase

meh :(

Is it still reliable @ 1.2bar with stock internals? Also, would be ace if you could post some pics of your AVC-R setup with the boost controller etc mate :thumleft:

I'm still learning the concept of an electronic boost controller. Did you disconnect your VSV? Over 300bhp (at flywheel I presume) is really impressive if your internals are still stock and only mods are DP, intake and boost controller.

as far as i know its stock internals

i made that power with the standard IC @ 1.2 bar :!:

Now i have fitted the bigger IC it over boost's to 1.34 before the ECU slaps me and cuts out  So i need to adjust the settings for 1.2, But i'm going to wait till ryan from 2 bar tuning to adjust it when he installs and maps my Power FC

Everyday i run 1.1 bar and i have not had 1 single problem.

Very nice mate! When I first got the car I was telling myself "whoa the power is awesome!!!" but now I keep feeling something a miss. I used to feel like I'm on a rollercoaster ride on boost but now I keep looking at the gauge to check if there's even boost :P (there is though from my acceleration times).

Just collecting bits of tips and information here and there before committing to modify my 2 ;)

Update this thread with pics of your new IC if pos mate!

looking after the engine, although i did and it still died.

i think chargecoolers are suppose to be safer at higer boost levels by keeping the charge of air going through the engine cooler????

Water/meth injection would help keep it all cool too I guess.

Either way thats awesome power results for the mods!

If you're running 1.2 bar on stock pistons, it's just a matter of time before the ringlands crack, and you start crying my friend. At 1.34 bar, you're just shortening it's life even further.

In the last 8 months its only seen 1.2 bar about 4-6 times on the dyno and a few runs up pod. every day use i run 1 - 1.1 bar.

the 1 off occation it hit 1.34 was just a over boost and its now been sorted  .

if engine failure happens i'll just do a forge build.

Happy times

so why does ryan from 2bar tuning map cars to run 1.2bar if it's that bad?
