My Poor Turbo.......ahhhhh (ADVICE)

Post by kanulondon »

Hello All,

You may remember my post below

http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... highlight=

In a nutshell I was taking my car for a burn up and I noticed complete loss of power, and subsequent turbo failure. I thought this may have
had something to do with my recently fitted Bailey's BOV. But I don't think that's the case

I took my car into a local mechanic. He's a nice guy but to be honest he probably isn't the hottest on MR2's. It's been a bit of an education with me telling him where to look, and sending him various pictures of the CT26 Turbo. Anyway when he finally took out the turbo he suspected a part was missing and it looks like he's right!

Basically the other impeller wheeel on the exhaust side is not there!!

Image

Doing some research of found the below pic of what the turbo should look like

Image

It looks like the turbine shaft has broken. Doing some more research I heard this is quite common? Is this true?

http://www.fensport.co.uk/partsfiles/st205tuning.htm

"The CT20 series turbo have 1 common problem - the turbine shaft is prone to breaking - therefore all our uprated CT20 turbos are fitted with a larger steel turbine shaft"

I have ordered a 2nd hand CT26 Turbo from the affiliates section(IMOC), and hopefully this item should be fitted next week sometime. My question is.......is this in anyway to do with my Bailey's BOV? Or was this just co-incidental?

http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... sc&start=0

What can be done to prevent this shaft from snapping?

Was it just my turbo's time to go bang?

I'd appreciate some informed responses.

I also intend to keep my broken turbo and possibly rebuilt it at a later date!

I thought that the CT26 was actually stronger than the CT20 due to having a larger diameter shaft?

No and yes !

What often happens is a little play occurs in the shaft, the turbine wheel is ceramic which will a little play cna catch the turbine housing. Catching it will certainly damage the impellars blades and generally knocking it out of balance..... this is where failure occurs, out of balance turbine impeller = snaps off shaft.

Only precautions are to have regular oil changes, run down - leave the engine running a fe minutes after a longing drive / thrash.

the turbo's number was just up, be lucky you dd get bits of the turbine rentering past the exhaust valves and back into the cylinders like mine, it killed the engine too on mine, scored the cylinder bores and took the crank out too !

Just drive it like you have done previously, you've just been unlucky this time.

Thanks JJ

That's a really informative post.

I guess it's time was just up indeed.

I think I'll leave the BOV off. I'll flog it for profit on eBay

I just want my 2 back and running. I have been without for almost 2 weeks!

Silly question....oil changes....can one do them oneself?

i would never recommend a screwdriver luize. oil filter tools normally do the job pretty well.
involve alot of f'ing and blinding, but it will come off.
the fella obviously is a bit of hassle with his turbo, dont think he accidently wants to put the screw driver through the engine valve that hooks onto the filter as well.
as this could happen with the screwdriver trick!

(im not saying it dont work, youve probably done it, lol. just that i wouldnt, just my 2p mind)

Hello Jim

Cheers for the post! And thanks for the Screw driver trick Luize...

Stupid question...I looked at the manual for this. Am I actually changing the oil filter at the time when I change it? or am I just draining and replacing the oil?

Also any recommendations on oil and the frequency in which other Imoc's change their oil?

your ment to change your oil every 3-4k miles on a mr2 turbo.
you need to replace the filter along with the oil, standard practice mate.
i use mobile 1 15w50, so do alot of peeps on here. its basically high performance engine oil. some use 10w40 i think as well. but youll find 90% of the turbo peeps on here use mobile 1 for sure.
oil filter can be got at your local mr t for around £5-7, oil is normally around £25-35 depending where you get it (halfords do it).

HTHs!

i was suprised when i went in there last to get one.
i spilled the beans that i had an import, had to put in all my vin and chassis codes, kept sying my car doesnt exist, made me kick up a fuss and i told them they put in my detals wrong, but they wouldnt have none of it!! stupid f*ck wits!
they finally done it, and then worked out the engine is a 3SGTE, and said, oh, we didnt need to do all that, we hav loads in the back!!!
same filter as st185 gt4 turbo and other 3SGTE engines.
MAKE SURE ITS FOR A 3SGTE engine, itll have it written on the side of the filter anyway.
should be no problem.

Clarke oil filter claw wrench CHT424
(or any of that sort of design)
which did the job PERFECTLY!!

To add to that I did this over the weekend myself.

I bought a filter removal similar to the 'Clarke double drive oil filter wrench CHT245' from my local hardware store for £1.99. Had it off in 5 seconds.

I use 10w40 oil, fully synthetic (castrol gtx) and I've not had any problems with it.

As for the oil filter, to shut Mr T up simply go in and ask for part number 90915-10004. Saves all the worry about what car, etc. Also get a sump plug washer incase you break yours. Costs about 70p

What's your local hardware store? as I can't see this device for any less than £12

Well I finally got my car back guys and what a bloody palava fuelled Drama!

Basically....Turbo Went

Bought a used CT26(£150)

Took it to a local garage to fix it.

Local Garage were a bunch of monkeys and I had to instruct them on what to do. They kept my car for 2 weeks
and charged me £300 for the pleasure (To be fair impeller wheel had smashed into teeny bits and the guy had to remove exhaust and cat)

Got the car back and it was like an old dog! The mechanic funked up my idling and the car stalled for fun

So much so that I had an embarassing moment at a set on traffic lights on a hot sunny day! Car failed to start and had to be towed!! :(

Gave up and went to Mr T (Western Toyota, Edinburgh) instead of taking it back to Bodgit&Scarper Mechanics

They sourced the problem as a dodgy Timing Belt....£200 to fix it. And the car started a treat

Also had a full service and compression check.....the car is NOW running like a dream. Idles properly, accleration is lovely
purrs like a cat

So the moral of the story is? I don't know...you tell me

All I know is that I am £900 lighter and can't afford to go on a summer holiday :(

Oh well...at least I have my '2'

And hear the story ends....thanks for everyone's help
