Fitting Blueflame exhaust - NOW FITTED!

Post by Peter C »

This weekend I'm going to be replacing my standard exhaust with a Blueflame system. The exhaust I am buying comes with a de-cat pipe but I will retain the original cat fitted to my car.

To ensure a good seal I will need the following gasket:

(Exhaust in photo is a Remus system)

Any idea what the part number is?

Also, with the car on axle stands, how easy is it to access the two bolts to release the rear box from the cat? Is it easier to remove the exhaust with the cat?

Cheers.

Peter

I'm not helpful on the gasket front, but do you have a angle grinder, couple of cutting discs and safety glasses of course ??!

I'm hoping I won't need those!

Lets say the probability in you seperating the exhaust flange without the need of grinder is 10%

Its the studs that will be unworkable / unuseable again Peter .. just rather you prep yourself for worst case scenario ! :thumleft: Often the stud will shear.. and again, you will have to cut it out.

Have a little looky under it and determine if its workable with hand tools only :thumleft:

Do you know what JJ, you've put me right off!

I might just take the car to an exhaust centre and have it fitted properly.

Thanks for the advice mate - I'd rather spend a few quid and have the exhaust fitted professionaly, rather than wreck half a weekend fiddling under a car with flakes of rust dropping in my eye every five minutes!

Time off is precious for those that work their ar5e off... Exhaust garages are geared up with heat guns / plasma cutters and what not.... They do that whole seperating / spliting systems all day long....I'd rather slip them £30-£50 and walk round the town and come back and its done, than spend the afternoon struggling with basic tools ! :D

Good effort Pete ! :thumleft:

Job done!

Before:

After:

I ended up taking the exhaust to a local exhaust fitter, which is just as well as it took 2 hours to remove the old system and install the Blueflame. The old exhaust bolts had to be shifted with oxy acetylene, a large hammer and a large dose of foul language. Best £40 I ever spent! The exhaust man wanted £20 for the job  but he spent so long tinkering and did such a good job that I had to give him more.

Earlier in the week I bought new gaskets from Toyota so the whole lot fitted together nicely.

Whilst the exhaust man was preparing the Blueflame for fitting I snipped the grille off. Exhaust looks great and sounds meaty.

Cheers JJ.

another proud blueflame owner took me 2 hours to fit my exhaust i done mine myself i had to use gary grinder,
i also done mine in the rain not a nice job at all but when finished i forgot all about the smashed knuckles, soaking wet clothes and 1lb of rust in my eyes stepped back and said a job well done wish i could have had mine fitted for £20 well done that man. :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:
she's all comming together nicely now after a fair bit of cash spent, not bad for just an n/a now for some body kit i think.

My JapSpeed now (I brought his car). I hope its not as loud as the JapSpeed, as I got a BlueFlame on order to replace it as its doing my head in! The Jap's a lovely looking exhaust, and the burbling and popping after a good run makes me giggle every time, but its just too much noise for me...

The Blueflame looks lovely though - I just hope its calmer (noise wise) than what I have currently...

Hi DefiantFrog,
You got a nice car there then :D
Peter looked at the car for me the day before you bought it and said the exhaust was loud. Like you said sounds great but the novelty soon wears off.... Thinking of replacing mine at some point so will probably go for a blueflame. Watch you don't get any neighbourhood cats stuck up those cans!

Hi Jenny & Frog!

The Blueflame does sound nice - bassy and mean but not massively loud. I recently added a cone filter on the induction side, which makes the engine sound even better - sweet harmony!

*thread hi-jack* :D

Hi Jenny & Peter!

Very sorry Jenny, I think i pulled the carpet from under your feet with that car. Am feeling remarkably guilty now... :( Did you get yourself sorted out with one?

I've already had to rescue 3 small children who clambered in to the massive expanse of black that is my twin 4" exit pipes! God knows how many cats are gone forever... ;)

*on topic*

Good news about the BlueFlame sound! Sounds like just what I want! :D

Hee hee no worries about the car totally my fault should have acted quicker!
I have got one now picked 'her' up last week Rev5 Tbar in silver/black so just like yours really except totally standard. Had to spend a few more £££'s but really happy with it so far just a few bits to sort. Should really sort my profile etc out.
Apologies to Peter for the thread hijack but I am sure he won't mind

Yup, snap.
Looks very nice. Still have my grill bent up 'cos I like the idea of maintaining the option but of late been considering getting rid. Weight and all that... hmm.
You know if you'll be at JAE Peter? How you liking the rev3 after getting to know it better?

Not this year, sorry dude.

HighwayStar wrote:How you liking the rev3 after getting to know it better?

Loving every minute of it! I wanted a more serene but still sporty drive, thus an automatic, air conditioned, with power assisted steering 8) MR2 fits the bill perfectly.

The exhaust and filter change has introduced a lovely bassy sound to the engine - something I missed since selling my previous Rev3.

As much as I would like a set of staggered 16/17s, I know that they would only look good with a set of lowered springs. However, speaking from experience, I am not going down that route again! I just couldn't live with the hard ride, which would be at odds with my MR2's cruiser spec.

Another day then.
Totally logical regarding the suspension/wheels. Also when I consider bigger wheels (tho I always fear worsening the ride... still, perhaps just 16s for the rear?) ... I always end up somehow thinking I'll miss the slightly retro now smaller wheel/bigger tyrewall look. There's a pic in my garage of a side on with a modern mid engined sports car that I think influences me...

Your car looks spot on. The less is more approach works for me.

For some reason my Blueflame fits a lot closer to the rear bumper than yours. My pipes are about 5mm from the bumper, yours look about 20mm!
