[Mk2] [Turbo] Sensor that controls temp gauge

There is a black sensor plug thats on the opposite side to the green coolant sensor that seems to be playing up.

My dash temp gauge stopped working for a bit and i found this sensor and gave it a wiggle and it started working again.

Think i might get a new one, but not sure what the sensor is called and does it control anything else other than just the dash temp gauge?

Car in question is a Rev 3 turbo.

i got mine from euro car parts for about £4. Just asked for the temp gauge sender.
